Hi guys!
Sorry for the stupid question which was asked millions of times here.
I just bought a PS2 and this whole business of backing-up/copying PS2 games is new to me.
I have created and burned .iso images of several PS2 games with Alcohol 120% anf DVD decryptor. When I insert them into the PS2 in says "insert a PS2 disk".
What should I do? I read that once an image is on HDD, I should patch the game and then burn it. How do I do that?
And I don't understand about these mod chips and magic swap disks. Do I really need to buy somethig extra to copy a PS2 game?
Any answer would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

In fact I think we would be fooling our selves if we have a community this large, and did not realize that there are some enemies present.

there is no way to play a back up of a game without a mod on your ps2.

you can either install a mod-chip or use a swap disc method.
most people prefer the mod chip for ease of use.

the reason - a ps2 game is pressed not burned onto the cd/dvd & has a boot code to load the game, when you back up on your pc it cannot burn the boot code onto the disc so you need a mod to boot it.

you only need to patch a back up if you intend to play the game online.

your back ups that you have alreadu made are probably ok once you mod your ps2.
also when burning games burn them on a good brand of media & burn at a slow speed. ps2's also prefer DVD-R rather than dvd+r
i hope this helps

I don't know. I prefer DVD decrypter better anyhow, it only worked for me for Grant theft auto San andreas. That is the only game

DVD Shrink doesn't work for PS2 games. Which game did you use it to backup? What are the exact steps you took? If this is true, someone else should be able to replicate it. I doubt seriously you used it to backup a PS2 game. I may have had my differences with you in other threads, but I would say the same thing to anyone I believed to be giving false info. If you can post a step by step guide and someone else can verify it works, I'll eat my words. Cheers!

Thanks a lot to everybody!
Now it's much clearer. I have downloaded several Swap Magic 3.6 iso files but I gtuess I still need flip-top cover. So probably the best and easiest thing is to buy a mod chip.
1) However, I read that it requires professional installation. How difficult is it to install this thing? Or where could I have it installed?
2) Where can I buy such a mod chip in Canada? Or is it still better to buy it online from the US?
Thanks again!

First: don't bother with Swap Magic too many people have problems with that.
Second: when you get a Mod-Chip make sure it's the DMS4, that will play any back-up game so long as the game is copied properly.
Third: for making a back up of your game use either DVD Decrypter or RecordNow Max 4.5

ok, i thought some one like Tokijin would have an answer, i've seen him all over the net. [geesh]

i can't decide what modchip to get. some say they do certain things, others don't.

anyone know where i can read reviews, or just tell my your thoughts on the best chips?

thanks.

[[i want to play ps1 and ps2 backups, have hd support, play online with copies, and multi-disc support (for games that say "please insert disc 2 to continue), and macrovision off+greenfix would be a bonus]]

Well, it seems to me that DMS4 is the best option. That's what I'll shoot for.
But the question remains:
1) How difficult is it to install this chip? Has anyone done it by himself? Could you give me any advice?
2)What about laser fix? Do I need it as well? I don't know how to check my version of PS2 but I just bought my console, so it has to be pretty new.
3) Where is the best place to buy the mod chip? Does anyone know any candian stores that sell it?
Thanks again!

(for mnpenner)

well, when i buy my modchip, i will search for it online, and browse every seller in the world, for...
instructions (free, of course)
full color pictures and all that.

if you know how to solder, you can do it.

and if you can't, there's the new dms4 solderless version.

also, mnpenner, the only thing keeping me from buying the dms4 is that it doesn't say whether or not it supports multi-disc games.

THAT IS A SERIOUS ISSUE for me.

what if i want to play final fantasy vii???

the modchip supports ps1 copies... but will the chip re-authinticate when the game askes me to put in disc 2? then disc 3?

the MATRIX INFINITY modchip says "supports multi disc games"

THAT'S what i'm worried about.

so, anyone know of any sites where all these functions are reviewed from a non-biased perspective??

Okay, so I'm going to get the MagicSwap program.. I've noticed that I'll need more than just the discs, however. It seems like there are a bunch of hardware pieces that I'll need. What, out of all of these different hardware pieces, will I need to play backup game discs? I have a SCPH-70001 model PS2.

cworkman: depends on the modchip, i hear.
tell me what you know about modchips.

some will play copies that havn't been patched. some won't. some will only play discs that are burned in ps2 format (long process... rip the image, break the image into files, put the files back into a new image, with ps2 formatting. sometimes replacing dummy files, that are made for anti-modding)

some modchips you just copy and go. some require more work in the copy. i.e.: swapmagic 3.6 would require the most work, and only supports ps2 format discs, cdr's, and dvdr's

Yeah you don't want the Mars modchip, I hope I got here in time to stop that purchase lol. Get a DMS 4 Pro SE, Matrix Infinity, or Crystal Chip 1.1. Anything short of those three is a waste of time and money. Read my modchip FAQ. If you still have any questions regarding chips, post here or PM me. I always have time to discuss modchips. :) The Matrix Infinity supports multi disc games fine. I originally got it because I wanted to have a way to play through PSX games that didn't allow you to save in between discs like Xenogears, Crono Cross, Thousand Arms, Valkyrie Profile, and Lunar 1 and 2. It handles those perfectly. I've tested all of them. You won't have any issues with multi disc PSX/PS2 games. In effect the chip activates each time you open the disc tray. The Matrix Infinity is ingenious, the chip goes into sleep mode after boot up, to avoid any danger of overheating. The DMS 4 supports multi disc games as well, just not PSX import games on the v.14 PS2. Aside from that it's fine.

thanks, Tokijin. dms4 doesn't support multi-disc on v14, you say? i have a v4 AND a v14. i was planning on getting a chip for my v4.
dms4 se pro looks tasty, 'cuz you can flash it with a hd loader.
(won't really need that with my v14)
so, i really need a USER'S perspective on the older consoles.

your modchip faq looks handy (no time to read just now, have to get off to work), but it looks as if it's just copy-pasted from websites...
i need, you know... what happened when an unbiased user tried it.

so far, i'm torn between the dms se 4 and the matrix infinity.
the only things pulling me toward the dms se 4 pro is the fact that the website has downloadable stuff that you flash the thing with.

makes me wonder if either chip actually works right out of the box?

i don't wanna have to use a memory card exploit. i mean, what the hell is that??? and how the heck do you get .elf files on a freakin' mem card??? i just bought a maxdrive, and it will only load memory card saves to it, and only from on directory. very weird program.

You don't need to run a memory card exploit. A chip supports loading elf files off the MC. You'd use this for stuff like HD Loader/HD Advance, PS2 Media player, etc. I don't have a DMS 4 Pro, but I know plenty of people who do, it's a great chip. I recommend it over the Matrix for that reason, it's a got a HD Loader program built into the flash. It's a great choice if you're interested in playing games off a HD. Team Toxic's HD Loader program is updated more frequently and has higher compatibility with most PS2 games than HD Loader/HD Advance. The Matrix Infinity has firmware that's upgradeable via flash CD as well. That's the main feature that sets these chips apart from knock offs and clones. They're constantly evolving/changing for the better. The only parts of my FAQ that were cut and pasted from other sites were the chips features. I didn't see any point in being original there, the manufacturer's said it best. The rest of it is original, researched, or quoted from modders that're friends of mine. I'm fortunate to have two modders that're friends of mine, Davbere and KC36330. I'm no modchip expert, but I've learned from people who are. I try to eliminate all the BS and fears people have about getting a good chip. Cheers!
