is limewire illegal if so are there any ways of protecting yourself i live in the uk and i haven't been able to find much information on p2p programs and the laws,

downloading music/software/movies whatever is illegal. To protect yourself use a ip blocker such as peerguardian 2, (link in my sig)

As berger said, downloading copywritten material is illegal, but having limewire isnt. As long as you dont share files you should be fine.

i have downloaded limewire and installed it but for some reson it keeps opening up by its self while im busy with other stuff.I 've checked all the options and cant find anything to stop it happening please could anyone help me out,also is it illegal to download for myself or is it just illegal to upload,one more thing ive just read someting on this forum about peer gaurdian what is this and how does this work .Many thanks a novice user

Make sure it is totally closed, you just cant hit exit, it stays running in the background. Do either two things. 1. In the bottom right corner of ur screen in the toolbar, it should be there, just right click it and close it. 2. control alt delete and go to applications-see if its running-then just end task.

Both, it is illegal to download even for yourself, and to upload, but I think its more dangerous to upload, than to download.

PeerGuardian 2 is an ip blocker that blocks coorperations from seeing what your downloading. Every company that goes on the computer/internet needs an IP address, PG2 blocks these IP address. While your downloading, make sure you have PG2 running. Also, Make sure you update everyday at least, because those music/movie/software companies change IP addresss often. I recommend you do run PG2, but even if you dont share files it is still illegal. I have heard of different cases where people were sued for downloading music, so even if you are not sharing your files, downloading is still illegal.

had no luck with limewire still opening up when i'm still not using it,done both things as required but to no avail,took all the ticks out of the boxes that i can see on start up,it has just opened up again as im writing this really annoying,On my last thing installed peer gaurdian have not touched anything ,should i've ticked all the boxes when installing it there was only one box ticked so ileft it,its sitting in the systemtray does this mean its working ok thanks

Try uninstalling limewire, then go to limewires main site and download a newer version. Make sure you delete the limewire folder in the program files, and use ccleaner and a regestry cleaner before you install limewire again. Hopefully this works for ya. You should be fine with pg2, you just kept it on the default settings which is good. I think i checked the government box too..(i believe its called that). Finally, yes, if its sitting in the system tray that means its working. clicking on it will bring it up..the ip's that are in bold are the ones pg2 is blocking. The others that are not in bold are okay.

You are very correct about that. I think many people are scared of getting caught, so they do not upload. As you said though, if they are afraid to get caught, then they shouldnt be using p2p.

just downloaded bittorrent havent the fogyist what the hell it is or what it does i thought i was downloading another p2p like limwire shows how daft i am any help would be grateful and can anyone surgest a good p2pthanks agian MACKUM

I know it's illegal but they can't exactly catch everyone. There are a whole lot of people who download this stuff and don't get caught. Also, as long as you don't upload or download like 100 songs a day, you should be fine.

One last thing. Just look at Auslander. He seems to be a die-hard sharer. I don't think he's been caught. If he hasn't been caught, then there is hope for the rest of us.
You know what really tics me off though. I see so many people who say that having P2P programs isn't illegal but downloading is. First, it's only illegal if you download copywritten material. Second, WTF are you gonna do with P2P programs if you don't download.
