I'm sorry if this has been covered 100 times, but I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for. If it has been covered in another thread please put the link in a response to this one. Thanks. Now, on with the question at hand.
I am looking to buy some blank Dual Layered DVDs from Supermediastore. I've dealt with them in the past and would like get my discs from them if possible. Which brand of discs should I pick up to have the best luck with? So far, (knock on wood) I've never made a coaster with my SL discs. I'm hoping I have the same luck with the DL but I know from reading some topics there can be issues if I get the wrong kind (not all discs are created equal it seems). I have an NEC DL DVD burner I picked up from Newegg if that matters. Thanks for the info.

Correction to my previous thread. I found the general consenus is Verbatim DL discs are the ones of choice (I've been using Fuji SL right now). So my revised question then is where is the best place to buy the Verbatim discs at? I checked Best Buy and Office Max. Neither has any sales going on for them this week. I wondered if there is an online source that has good prices as a rule. Thanks.

supermediastore, rima, or newegg all have good prices online. Comparison shop between those three and you'll more than likely get the best deal on Verb DL until they go on sale in brick & mortar stores...

Just a head's up, Bestbuy usually runs as 10 pack of Verbatim +R DL for 19.99. Otherwise, it's always 34.99. If that's the price this week, then just wait a week or two, the 19.99 sale always comes back.

Other than that, Newegg is always a preference for me. They're extremely quick with shipping (usually a day or two early with their expected shipping).

Bought a 15pk of Memorex 2.4X DVD+R DL ($30 BestBuy sale)cause I read they were made by Ritek. DVD Identifier confirmed this. I have burned 15 without a single problem. Playback is perfect. Still pricey but for select projects it works great!!

I recommend verbatim DVD+R DL media and if you haven't already done so, flash your NEC with some firmware that will booktype +r media to dvd-rom. Some NEC drives are capable of booktyping +r DL media to dvd-rom with official f/w but you might double check to see if your model does to assure better chances of compatability with you set top dvd player.

Best Buy is selling (both in the stores & the online site) Verbatim +R DL 30 pack in cake box for $39.00 normally $59.99 I bought 2 packs of them & hope I didn't make a mistake as they are made in Singapore. I wonder who the real manufacturer is?

use dvd identifier to determine who made the discs http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ I'll bet they are mitsubishi kagaku which are made in singapore. Those are the good stuff.

Yep they are good discs as Plextools told me! Now to burn some movies on them with DVD Decryptor. If they layer break works (which it should) then bye bye Nero Recode..

Correction (my mistake) the Best Buy Verbatim +R DL sale is a 20 pack, not a 30 pack. Best to check online (www.bestbuy.com) to see if stores in your area have it in stock. If they don't then you can buy it online from the Bestbuy site. The Pasadena TX store (Fairmont Pkwy at Beltway 8) had 2 on the shelf & I took both of them.

They had Fugifilm +R DL (20 pack) for $49.95 with 6 on the shelf. I left them there as I have no idea if it's relieable media (or who makes it) & took home the Verbatim instead...

Good choice. Verbatim is unbeatable in the DL market.

Can you burn an ISO with DVD Decryptor & have the layer break work without using an MDS file? I've got 4 (classic) old movies downloaded from the alt.binaries.multimedia.vintage-film newsgroup that I'd like to see before I search Amazon to buy a legal copy of the ones I want to own. If I don't like one or more of the movies then I'll just throw that disc (or discs) away then delete all the files for that movie. If the layer break won't work without the MDS files then I'll just watch the movies on the computer with WinDVD. The ISO would be created with Shrink (with no compression)if Decryptor will burn the DL disc without using an MDS file. None of the movies came with one. Just the VOBS & other files.

Could Nero Recode do the layer break correctly from the files? Or am I SOL as far as the layer break is concerned? If so then I'll watch them on the computer....

Give imgburn a try. I believe it will handle the ISO file. It is all I use to burn ISO files to DL media. http://www.imgburn.com/
