Whats up guys, ive been reading the forums here and I think I have a problem no one has really looked at before. My problem is this I have a 16x burner and when I try to copy a disc at 16x it takes the same amount of time as it does to burn at 4x. DMA is set right, but the read buffer is about 50% and the burners buffer fluctuates, thus creating the prlonged time at 16x. Has anyone made a "on the fly" copy at true 16x speed? How long did it take? It seems im stuck at the fifteen minute 4x mark, no matter what burner I upgrade to. I have a sony 810a, but I dont think its the burner. I dont have anything running in the background, I just dont know whats going on here, can anyone help?

I hope you're not burning a movie at 16x! maybe a data DVD but don't tell me it's a movie backup! First of all you'll run into problems with playback, read errors galore and maybe even write errors! Just cause my car can got 140mph doesn't mean I am going out there and drive that fast. the idea here is to backup your movie so it will last long. Burning too fast might not make the disk last long. errors eventually show up. Now that that is said...... onto your other problems..........

I don't know what's going on with you drive and why it will only go at 4x........ check your program settings and make sure you have it set to MAX when burning and then see if it will burn at 16x. got to be the programing not the drive or the disc itself.... make sure you are using a 16x disc!

the only time I burn on the fly is MAYBE to make a copy of a copy..... but that's risky! I usually don't burn on the fly at all! Too many things can go wrong and then you wind up with a coaster! It's best to let the program copy to Hard Drive then burn from there!

Sorry it took so long to reply but I was on vacation. The problem Im having is burning on the fly I can only copy disc to disc at 4x, anything faster and the buffer levels rise and fall untill the disc is finally burned...but thats 30-15 minutes later. Sure I can burn from the harddrive at 16x but what im concerned with is copy to copy on my duplicator. while I havent upgraded my duplicator's burners yet I was interested in if I will be able to get true 16x duplication from the burners that I install or will it be stuck at 4x.

Check to see if you were checking the DMA settings for the right drive (You'd be surprise how often people check the wrong one).

Other than that, the chances of you ever truly reaching 16x speeds are slim to none. Both my drives are very healthy and the fastest I've ever seen a write speed is 12x. By the time it's ready to eclipse that mark, the disc is already done. Burning at the max speed (of 16x media) will take about 5 minutes.

With all that said, it's not worth burning at 16x. No, I've never had any issues with 16x burned discs (they're all Verbatims), but it's too much of a risk.

Also, don't ever burn on the fly. That's even riskier than burning at 16x. Combine both, and you're asking for trouble.
