I'm having trouble getting the disc id off my originals, so I can backup games like NBA 2K6 and NHL 2K6. I have the disc id utility, but every time I run it and check a disc with it it comes up with the id as "00 00 00 00 BC"".

I run Swap Magic, then swap in the disc id utility, then swap in the game, but it comes up the same every time. Any ideas?

i dont think theyre even supposed to have ids,
the disk ids are only for blank discs, or what were once blanc discs.

i need the disc id, because if you try to burn a backup of an online capable game without patching in the disc id, the game likely won't work, or if it does, the online content won't work.

Basically if you use the right media and a decent program like DVD Decrypter then all should be simple! I have created alot of backups using DVD Decrypter and Ritek disks and never had a problem. If you set you drive speed to 2x aswel helps with the backup quality, i have tried 4x with some games and are then jumpy! Never had a problem with that since i have changed to 2x speed

Didnt think that you could play copied games online anyway! Xbox is loads better for online gameplay alot simplier and user friendly

Download DVD Disc ID utility v3, http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=online.html If you dont already have it. Then burn it to a DVD not a CD. The program you have should work, but in my opinion this program is much better. If you have a slim PS2 do what I do:
simply boot swap magic,
1. load DVD Disc ID Utility v3,
2. let it spin for 10 seconds,
3. the while it is spinning quikly remove DVD Disc utility,
4. then quikly place your original back in.
5. let spin for 10 sec, Hit X

If you have an older model with front loading drive, I don't know.
Insted of using an ID utility try using http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/291526
and just fill in the XX XX. with letters or #s A-F & 0-9
letters all CAPS.

Seems like alot of hassle just to play a backup game! Just do a straight 1:1 copy using DVD Decrypter and if its a online game you want just buy it

dreasey1 - thanks for the help. i do have an original front-loading ps2, so i'll just play around to see what works.

craig1984 - the point of this is that these are backups not pirated games. i do have the originals, but i also am notoriously bad at losing games, so i like to have backups rather than having to buy the game over and over. i don't really play online, but i do like having the most current rosters whenever possible, so i need to be able to get online.

Oh i see sorry i misunderstood you,i have over 50 PS2 games all are original with the backup copies. I have used DVD Decrypter on all of them even though they are online and all work ok, never had to worry about the id thing you are talking about

i understand that your trying to get the mark that DVD Decrypter cannot burn from a original onto a copie then this is really hard and needs alot of knowledge. The DNA$ is inbedded into a original and therefore very hard to copie

Actually getting the neccesary DNAS codes for omline play and then patching them onto your backup copy is not a hassel or hard to do at all. The instructions may look a little confusing, but after you do it one time it becomes simple. it is the only way to make a true backup of your original. Of course if you don't care about playing yourt backup online, don't bother.

bizwhizzy: Let me know if you get it to work on your PS2.

so far, i've been able to find codes online and patch them in to make the games work, but i still haven't found a way to successfully get the IDs off my original discs. so i am getting working discs, but also running the risk of doubling an existing ID and having it banned by sony.

OK theres has to be a way to get the IDs of your originals, maybe start a tread asking "How do I get DNAS IDs of my originals using Disc ID Utility and a front loading PS2". But in the mean time if by chance your copy does get banned don't worry you can rip the ISO off your backup back onto your hard drive using dvddecryptor and re-patch it with a fresh DNAS code and burn again onto blank media. You may also have to re-register under a different name but I'm not sure. try re-patching alone, first. Of course thats if your copy gets banned.
