Ok, I just recently got my V12 PSTWO modded to play backups of my games, and was having trouble with slow loading games/skipping during gameplay etc and thought it was my laser because the laser goes wild while trying to load games (maybe the people that modded it didn't install the laser fix or some adjustments had to be made with the laser or something), I spoke with the guys that did the mod for my PS2 and they said that for some strange reason, the V12's laser prefers DVD +R (as opposed to DVD -R) discs..
So, I went out and bought some DVD +R's and walah, works a treat! No more slow loading or skipping in game! Games now run as well as my originals.
Just thought I would share my experience with you all since I get a lot of help off this forum, and if any of the guys that write guides and things would like to add it in their guides about media types or slow loading games/game problems etc that many of us n00bs seem to have trouble with :P
p.s. Err so.. does anyone want to buy 80 or so Taiyo Yuden DVD -R's? lol
Thanks for trying to give us info.. it might be helpful to some newbs maybe, but for the most part people already know to try different media if games not working right.. that's why the more experienced members ask what model ps2 you have right away if people are having problems.
Some rules to go by are:-
1) Don't rush out and buy a big pack of dvd's until you know what will work on YOUR PS2!! - stick to getting small packs or "samplers" until you know better.
2) Make sure all your computer software, firmware etc is up to date.
3) Burn at half the max speed of the disc (max 4x though).
You could always give those TY's another shot... they might work if everything else is ok on the hardware/software/firmware side... what burner are you using by the way?
Or you could just use those TY discs for movies etc.
yeh it's no dramas, i bought a 100 spindle because i was out of discs altogether so i'll just use the -r for movies and stuff and +r for games.
all my drivers/firmware etc are all up to date.
and i'm using a MSI ATAPI 8xMax hunk of crap, it's old, but it does the job.
i read every possible thing about discs and every guide i could find that dealt with slow loading games, and used those guides to make my backups. I even posted here asking if anyone knew any solutions (and mentioned all of my specs), and all i got was the same response as i read everywhere else (#2 and #3 that you just posted, actually lol), and i had already covered all of those bases.
nowhere did anyone mention about version 12 ps2's and DVD+R, thats why i posted it here and suggested it be added to a guide (If it's already in a guide I'd love for someone to point me to it because i swear i've read every guide at least 3 times).
Well, it's not specifically mentioned that v12 will not play DVD-R because most of the time they will... my bro has one and it plays all the DVD-R I do flawlessly... what I meant was that if one format isn't working for you for some reason, then try the other and see how you go with that.
It's more likely that it's a burner issue and it not liking the media.. you could try getting a better burner for it.. I recommend the NEC models, they burn everything I throw at it!! then you might find that taiyo yuden and DVD-R discs work for you too.
The only models of ps2 that I know to be more picky about the format of media eg DVD+R is the lower versions like 1-4 I think.. all other models should play either format fine as far as I know.
yeh thats a valid point, but i'd rather go out and buy discs - which i know i can use for other things if they dont work for games - than a whole new burner, which possibly wont make any difference (compared to dvd+r's that have already made a difference) :P
on the other hand, if i had access to a decent burner i would definitely give the tayo -r's a second chance with games, but i don't, so that wont be happening anytime soon.
No worries, it's totally your choice man and I can see where you're coming from about not wanting to buy a new burner...
For me it's a different matter, I think that buying a new burner is a good option if you're having problems with dis compatability.. it only cost around £30 for a new burner, which is less than I pay for a 100 pack of taiyo yudens.. so it's worth it to me if I was having probs to get the new burner that's gonna save me money in the long run with not having coasters, and the drive should last a few years or more even with the amount of discs I burn.
Anyway, good luck with it, I hope everything stays ok for you :)
