best software for collating mp2 clips?

Would anyone know of the best software to use/buy for mixing and matching various mp2 clips. Little editing will be required. Transitions would be a plus, but not essential. Basically I have several unprotected DVDs from which I would like to take the best scenes. Currently I am using the analog method (read from DVD player and copy with DVD recorder) with RCA cables.
