i took two dvd rips(i downloaded them, i didnt do the ripping) both were .avi format. I used convertxtodvd to convert to mpeg2 and then just had convertx burn them to the dvd. when i played the dvd in my regular stand alone dvd player, it wouldnt work. the screen said "TV system...." i put the dvd in my PS2 and the first movieplayed but when i tried to fast forward or next to the second movie, it stopped the dvd, and the "Tv system" message came up again.

I have several questions

1. Can this be fixed w/o burning another dvd?
2. For future burns, what should i do so multiple VOB files play?
Should i just use nero instead to do the burning or should i even join the avis together before converting and just do it that way?

Anyone's expert advice would be appreciated, thanks

Converting the AVI to Mpeg2 is good but to get the disc to play in a DVD player you need to author it in DVD format. Check out TMPGEnc DVD Author. With this you can load up both Mpg files, create a menu and then burn a disc that will play in a regular DVD player.

There are a million programs you could use and a lesser number of programs you should use. Nero should be used for burning discs, and that's about it.
On the other hand, TMPGEnc DVD Author is among the best programs you can get to author DVDs. For just painlessly creating a dvd from a bunch of MPGs it's the easiest and quickest solutions out there. Some of the other top offerings have more options for nearly unlimited customization of menus and subtitles and whatnot, and if that's what you want go for the more expensive software, but for easy, quick, painless and reliable nothing really beats TMPGEnc DVD Author.

what would you recommend to convert AVI to mpg? the convertxtodvd only makes the VOB and the TMPGEnc won't accept my AVI files?

Convertxtodvd works well enough to convert your stuff, but DVD Author is better on the authoring side. You can use it to open your VOBS after they are done and create menu, etc. The payoff doing it this way is that your disc will work in your players without the errors you are getting.

when i used dvd author to try to open my VOB files, it says not supported

plus, have you ever heard of convertx shuttin down the computer when it's around 80% complete??

might hunch is that maybe my computer is overheating after encoding for a few hours

thanks again for all your advice

You can use Nero Vision to convert your Avi files. It puts out great quality. Convertxtodvd does the same thing. It converts your Avis to DVD format and you can burn them and watch'em on your standalone player. I have done numerous with Nero, and it works great.
Here is a guide by Alkohol for Nero:

And a guide for Convertxtodvd:
