I have just installed my flip-top and have the swap magic discs.
I have backed up several games
MVP baseball 2005
Desert Storm 1&2
Hitman 2
Starwars battlefront
and a few others.
I'm not really a newbie to backups, but kinda new to PS2 backups.
I use good media, (TYGo2's)(-r's), rip with Decrypter, then write with decrypter as well.
That all seem to work, but with most of them it takes like almost 3-4 real minutes to load the game.
with the MVP baseball, it seems like its hanging up some, but always plays. I have tried about 4 times with the MVP.
In Conflict desert storm, it takes about 4 minutes to load a game, then if you restart a mission, it takes ANOTHER 4-5 minutes to load.
I understand everything has drawbacks, but has anyone else noticed this?
I had a problem originally with sound, but found out that was a media issue. The media i have been using for movies (thats works fine with over 1,000 bacKups)did NOT work that well with games.
thanks

Well the PS2 laser is a lot more picky than a stand alone DVD player, so it's not surprising you had some issues with questionable media. It's not normal for backup to take 3 or 4 minutes to load with Swap Magic, try rebuilding the games giving you problems.
10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. The main purpose of rebuilding is to shrink the game's Table of Contents (TOC-the size of the game) in order to boot it with Swap Magic. The TOC for the Swap Magic DVD is around 4.37GB's. There is no need to rebuild games if you have a modchip. Another purpose of rebuilding is to make games run smoother. Usually the size of the game after rebuilding is smaller, but not always. Some games have dummy files used to beef up the TOC and help them run more smoothly. A good way to lower the game's TOC is to overwrite a large dummy file. If you are having trouble getting a backup to boot, and you're sure the media isn't the problem, try rebuilding the game.
11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949 With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515 With Expert (Gnie's new rebuilding tool):
Gnie's PS2 Auto Rebuilder Tool Download (Thanks to 3DLuis):
http://www.alucard.cc/ps2/ExPERT_v1.03.rar
Instructions to Gnie's Tool ExPERT From Paddymail:
Here's how to use it.. it might not work for all games though.
Open the program.
1. Select the Shrinker_ps2_psp_CdDvd5_iso.epi on the plugins drop down list.
2. Select the iso you want to rebuild.
3. Click extract LBA.
4. Click extract file and wait for it to finish.
5. Click rebuild file and wait for it to finish.
6. Click rebuild LBA.
7. Burn the new iso with Nero or DVD Decrypter as usual.

Thanks for the info.
Now check this. I just tried MVP baseball for a 3rd time, no difference in anything, and it worked perfect. No lag at all.
I guess its a picky science.
Thanks again.

I had the same problems as you, but im using a chip not SM.
I was using same media as you, and had slow loading games, was doing everything that everyone suggested i do as far as firmware/driver updates, rebuilding, etc etc and found it was as simple as using dvd+r's, not -r's..
if you have further trouble with any games in the future, buy a 5 pack of (decent) +r's and try them out (booktype to dvd-rom in DVD Decrypter too if you can - my burner cant and +r's still work fine though).

Oh for the love GregInnes, don't go saying that everytime somebody has a problem with Taiyo Yuden. No it's not perfect, almost every thread I've come across that involves people having issues with TY has been traced back to user error. Is it perfect? Of course not. But it's as close as any man-made DVD media can be. Taiyo Yuden in the hands of knowledgeable user is a 95%+ success rate. I gauruntee you 9 out of 10 people will get worse results with Sony0D Media then they will Taiyo Yuden media. I've burned 150 PS2 games to TYG02 with 0 coasters. Several people have burned a ton more TY's with that with about a 1% failure rate. DocTY aka Kivory666 has burned 3,000+ TY's with about 30 coasters. That's 1% over 5 years of sustained use. Good media is only as good as the person using it.

Of course pressed DVD-ROM media is better than blank DVD Media. You also need a press burner to burn to those DVD-ROM's. Those cost 10,000's of dollars.

Greginnes - DVD-ROM means Read Only Media... that's why you can't burn on them.. and as Tokijin said, they are pressed discs, same kind of way vinyl is.. not exactly the same, but in the same ballpark.
I don't want this turning into a flaming war or anything, just pointing out some facts.
Taiyo yudens are really good media, much more success rate and quality burns than some other media... they won't be that good for everyone, because not everyone has the same hardware, dvd writer etc.. and some people don't update their firmware, drivers and stuff for their PC's too, which would help.
Anyway, off topic.. so will leave it at that.
Thunder66 - try some of the things suggested to you in this thread.. and if still no luck post back and we'll try to help you further.
good luck :)

Okay, I love TY's. I use only TY's for everything... with the exception of PS2 backups. My ps2 hates em. I have to use Sony's for my Ps2. And it's not user error because I do everything exactly the same. I tried mulitple TY -r's & +r's with multiple games and no go. It just can't read them. Sony's work 100% for me. Just the way it goes I guess. Could be cause my ps2 is 4 - 5yrs old too... I don't know. Anyway, lata!

Wow two people. I have a v.4 PS2 with is 5 years old an it plays TY's fine. MIT Sony's aren't on par with Taiyo Yuden. If the Sony's are Made in Japan, they could code as Taiyo Yuden's. You ever check the Media ID of those Sony's? Even money they're TY's. Run em through DVD Identifier and post the results. 90% of the time I've seen people with TY error's it's user error. Maybe you fall into the other 10%. Either way I'd like to move forward from here and get back on topic. Cheers!

Ok, dont fight over my account. If theres that much hostility, take each other on in FIGHT NIGHT 3!! lol.
I guess from doing some experimenting, its just a hit or miss operation. But to be honest,i think its more LAZY on my part. I want to just put a disc in, read it, then burn it to a backup.
The other steps as far as rebuilding, kind of get me lost. (although there is alot of people that put some excellent guides up).
I guess if i want perfect games, then i should take some more time, and rebuild.
If i want it quick and easy, the i have to settle for some lag time in loading some games. They do all seem to work using the TY's, just some take a little more time loading scenes.
I think IM going to take some time and try to back up GT4 tonight.
I just have to do some research on how to do it.
what programs etc.
Thanks

Thanks for the concern but this isn't fighting. No disrepect to GregInnes or anything, but I'm holding back quite a bit. He's learned a lot, but he's got aways to go to catch me. Anyway like I said, moving forward, you need to try rebuilding if your games are loading slow. Expert is a great app which rebuilds the game for you and is very easy to use. I'd start there. Rebuilding can be intimidating at first. Just be patient, read the steps, and try out Gnie's Expert.
