hi,
ive managed to forwward ports on my router and internally made exceptions for azureus as well. for both udp and tcp. this has solved the nat error problem. i occassionally get green faces now. and it always passes the nat test. however in the latest version of azureus DHT firewall is always up. i would appreciate help from anyone who excels in azureus use and knows about the its latest changes and how i could go about solving this problem. thank u in advance.

If you're using private trackers, DHT should be disabled anyway.
And if it says you're firewalled (DHT and firewalled are two entirely different things.), then either you haven't forwarded correctly, your local IP is changing, or there is software standing in the way...such as the windows firewall or Zone Alarm, or something similar.
I'm working on a large article on my website that should help pretty much all users get green lights all the time, but it's only partially finished right now.
In the mean time, you can either search my name for a post I answered the other day about fixing yellow lights in Azureus, or you can download the pdf from the first link in my sig, which might very well help you.

exuse my ignorance but whats a "private tracker"?
Azureus says "DHT Firewalled" - I have turned off my personal firewall (PC Cillian) and windows firewall is turned off. I have forwarded the ports on my router correctly, and I am not using the default port- 6881 or whatever it is - is there anything else I can do??

obtain is fine, your IP might never change. It might eventually though, in which case all you have to do is go change the rule in your router to point towards the new IP. I recommend this over static IP's though, because of the headaches static IP's eventually cause.
And don't worry about DHT, seriously, NAT is what you need to be concerned with.
And a private tracker is one where you had to register to get access to downloads. bitsoup.org comes to mind.

I've only been on the "torrent"learning curve for about a week. I use Azureus also. I found the afterdawn.com tutorial about Azureus(and all
torrents/trackers) to be excellent. What I got was this. The yellow firewall is not that big a deal. If your NAT, and share ratio are good, then everything "is fine". My firewall stays yellow most of the time but I d/l fine, had no problems. And yes, I have a lot to learn, there is a lot going on with torrent downloading.

thanks to the other posters for help on this issue.
this post seems to have solved my Azureus / bittorrent connection problem.
http://retecool.com/forum/threads.php?id=14344_0_20_0_C
I also updated to the latest Java runtime, and turned off UPNP (used port forwarding, and added
exceptions in windows firewall for Azureus on the port I am using, udp and tcp.
I was experiencing net connection loss, unable to ping other pcs on the network, etc.
however, this post may help those who wish to keep using DHT

[edit] Well the problem came back after a short while, I'm now trying new drivers for my nic to see if that helps]
[edit 2] After upgrading the NIC drivers on my:
Realtek RTL81698110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC
Things seemed to work ok. I wanted UPNP enabled though, so I upgraded to the latest firmware for my router:
D-Link DSL-G604T - (firmware edition: DSL-G604T_FW_V1.00B02T02.UK.20050815)
I now have green smilies, DHT disabled, NAT OK and everything seems fine. I'll report back if it drops again.
[edit 3] Also I should point out that my Azureus settings for Transfer > Max connections globally is set to 90. Higher settings might work find but since it's all working now, I'm going to leave this alone (and 90 is mentioned in the Wiki as a good value anyway)
