I've got a Sony Dvd player that use to just encode and rip the dvd's and NEC 1300-a as the burner. I've got an issue that started about a month ago where any disc gives me the same "failed to read from file %s" message. It will get the compression rates just fine but after I start the burn process, it counts up to about 40seconds and then fails. Now I can put the original disc in the burner and it will work just fine but of course I gotta wait until the ripping is done and insert the blank disc afterward, which is a pain.. Plus if I use Dvd shrink 3.2, I can use the reader to rip the disc like nothing's wrong with it at all. I've seen some different threads but no real definitive answers. If you guys can help, it would be greatly appreciated. And also, this is my first post, go easy on me. Why does my burn speed on this error log say 0 kb/s and I've seen others that actually say a speed??

If I understand correctly, you have the original disc in one drive and the blank media in the other, and trying to ripp/ burn on the fly, without first saving the file to HDD?
For Nero to work like this, you would have to have a disc with no protection, or have a background ripper, like AnyDVD to do the decrypting. Also,
Quote: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If reader and burner share the same IDE channel, this create a slowing of data flux between reader and burner.
On the fly copy is recommended only if reader and burner are on different IDE channels.
Another possibility is that 1:1 copy has failed is because source disc is bigger than destination, so is necessary compression of the movie. Even with big CPU power, this operation is hard to do on the fly, because video compression require many passes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, if you want to burn on the fly, the file should not need compression and the ripper should be able to read 2x faster than the burner. I would advise to copy the files on HDD and then burn the DVD.
Quote: VTS_01 Title Vobs [15017 vobus] 5066.04MB -> 4459.00MB [R 0.69]
This looks like your file needs compression. hard to do on the fly.

Sorry I didn't clarify at first... I use the Sony to just rip to the harddrive and the Nec 1300 burns it. I rarely use the "on the fly" method because this pc doesn't have alot of available ram. So, the only thing that's wrong is Nero won't use my Sony to rip discs anymore. DVD Shrink will so I know the drive is working ok.It's worked for the last year so I don't know why it just up and stopped acting right.I miss it working because I see that DVD Shrink rips much slower than Nero. Thanks for any input you guys may have.

Nero does not rip, shrink does. Thats why Nero is not working but shrink is.

Ok, I'm talking about Nero RECODE. Now the last time I checked, it takes the original disk, rips the movie, shrinks it and burns the copy. Well my problem is that the drive I use to rip the original disc will not work within RECODE ONLY.. All other programs work properly.. Any ideas????

Recode will only rip if the movie has no copy protection wat all. Shrink or other decrypters will rip copy protected DVDs.

As cyprusrom has stated, if the movie you are trying to back up is copyprotected then you are going to need a prog that will break that copy protection or else you can post til you're blue in the face and still fail.
I recommend you download a free 21 day trial of AnyDVD and have that running whilst using Nero Recode, it's available from slysoft site.

Ok fellas, I've got AnyDVD.. I know about protected dvd's. Everyone in here who uses recode knows that you can't even analyze the disc when it's still protected, let alone start the burn process. Let me clear this up, this post is for all discs protected and non protected. I can only use one drive in Recode but all other programs I'm able to use both. That's all I wanted to know. Any answers to that question?

I have the exact same problem. It only started happening in the last week. I am thinking it might be some kind of virus. I have tried to recode a home video and the same thing happens, so it has nothing to do with copyright protection. My burner is also an NEC 1300-a. It burns data to a DVD no problems but just won't recode. DVD Shrink doesn't work either.

This is probably why nobody answered your queerie.
@biggerbro,
Quote: I have tried to recode a home video and the same thing happens, so it has nothing to do with copyright protection.
Nero Recode can only be used to back up DVDs it will NOT recode a home video unless it is already on a DVD.

Nor does DVD Shrink!!!

It is a Home VIDEO in DVD Format on my Harddrive it has stopped recoding to DVD+R DISCS. It appears to stop during the encoding process, not the burning process. I think the program has been corrupted. I'll try a reinstall and let you know what happens. Please don't bother trying to state the obvious. I am an advanced user of nero and rendering software.

Be nice my friend. If you can't help nor do you need help, since you say you are a nero expert, why post at all?
You say:
Quote: I have the exact same problem.
And the original problem was:
Quote: So, the only thing that's wrong is Nero won't use my Sony to rip discs anymore. DVD Shrink will
And later you say:
Quote: It is a Home VIDEO in DVD Format on my Harddrive it has stopped recoding to DVD+R DISCS
this doesn't seem to be even close to be the same problem. He had a ripping problem, his drive is not recognized, you have a encoding/burning matter. And I don't think it was obvious that your Home Video was in DVD format already. it could've been an avi, divx, whatever. many people think they can get a mpeg or avi to a DVD using Nero Recode or Shrink. If it is a DVD format, why reencode anyway?
Piss me off, and I Will ignore You!

so if the file is already on your hard drive, you are saying that the version of Nero recode you are using wont respond. Now i had this problem with 6.6.1.4/recode and shrink, but not with 6.6.0.18/recode and shrink.
I really wonder if you are right about it being a virus or maybe its more a software glitch
@ biggerbro: dont be sarcastic to the members please, we are trying to help you
@ daddybig: can you provide the complete log

Hi,
I have had the exact same problem described by DaddyBig. Up until a month or so ago I was always able to use Nero Recode to save (and shrink) a copy of a DVD to my hard drive (in this case, for discs with no protection). Now, when trying to make a copy of the exact same discs, I get the "Failed to read from the file" message after about 42 seconds. The odd thing, though, is that this happens only with my internal (qsi sbw-242) dvd drive (Inspiron 8500, Windows XP). It does NOT happen with my external Sony vrd vc20. Still, this is a big problem since I often do not have my external drive with me.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated!
Thanks.

What media did you use to record your movies onto? If you used some poor quality media, and with a picky driver(reader) you might get that problem. What I would try is use DVD Decrypter in ISO read mode, copy the movie to your DVD and then ISO write mode and burn (or you can use Nero Burning Rom to burn).
Does your internal drive recognize original DVDs?

Thanks for such a quick reply.
I've been using the same media as before when everything worked (Sony and Maxell). My drive (CD-ROM/DVD) works fine - burns CDs, plays DVDs without problems. I can also transfer files (drag and drop) off any media onto my HD. Since I posted my message last night, where I mention that Nero Recode works fine with my external drive, I saw this message on another forum:
= = =
recieved a email from Nero today, it says its from the supervisor in charge of bug or error reporting. It says
1.there is a ongoing issue with the latest version of Nero recode that it will only reconise one drive or burner .So you have to put source dvd in the burner, copy the files ,then burn in the same drive. So burn at once will not work. Some times there solution works and some times it does not.
= = =
Has anyone heard of this problem?
I only have Nero 6, but I did update (to the latest, Nero 6 Reload - which for Recode means version 2.2.6.17). Has anyone updated Nero 6 and still been able to use multiple drives?? (If DVD Shrink works for DaddyBig, it really does sound like a problem with Nero...)
Thanks.

I had the exact same problem with Nero recode when I put together a friends system. Certain versions dont like to read from or write to certain drives, his DVD-ROM wouldn't work with it, but when he switched to a different burner most his problems went away.

I solved my original problem by just replacing the drive. I got a new pioneer 16x dual layer drive and now I don't have the problem. Thanx
