Hi. My situation is this. I have been ripping for some time now wuth basically two tools: DVD Shrink and DVD Decripter. Haven't had need for anything else since both of them have served me well. Recently DVD Decripter started acting weird. The "Device Buffer", which used to stay full throughout the rip, started dancing up and down going from 100% down to as low as 25%. My ripping speeds dropped from 8x down to 1.4x and today, as I was trying to BU King Kong, the regular buffer, not the device buffer, went down down down to zip. I noticed that if dvd decripter was in focus, the buffer would drop, and if I clicked anywhere on the desk top to bring it out of focus, the buffer would climb up. Click on the app's window, buffer down, unfocus it, buffer up. I had done some changes to the settings to BU another movie that was giving me problems so I clicked defaults and nothing. Same problem. Obviously, I burned a coaster. I checked the device manager in Windoze to see if by chance DMA was disabled, nope, it was good.
Here is my system's general info:
WinXP Pro Service pack 2.
1.5 gigs Ram
2.08 GHz Athy
Sony DVD RW DRU-710A with BY02 firmware
Software used is:
DVD Shrink v 3.2
DVD Decripter v 3.5.4.0

Any ideas help will be appreciated.

Could be the effect of encryptions on newer movies which DVD Decrypter can no longer handle....

Not sure if this will help or not, but your firmware is long out of date. You might want to update here:

I just defragged my hard drive. Didn't help. So, it is time to upgrade firmware and maybe use a new program. What would be the latest and greatest firmware for my drive? That I can say I haven't done much of and don't know. I checked the website but it has a number of upgrades. Mine has the string 02, the others have the string X(#), will that fly?
Also, what other decription program do you recommend?
Thanks a bunch.

Sony lists BYX5 as the latest for your drive. I would do that one.

OK... check this out. I tried to burn a copy of this movie with Nero and set it up so it would record at 4x. Nero checked the speed of the drive and it said it was too slow. I have noticed that the read rates start (on dvd decrypter) 2.x, then all of a sudden they drop to 0.0. Could my hard drive be getting ready to buy the farm?

Hey... I found out the possible reason for my woes. My HDD doesn't have DMA enable as reported by Nero. The problem is this, If I check on Device Manager, under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, it says that it has DMA If Available set on but down below it says that the actual setting is PIO. How can I change that? I've gone to the BIOS and set it up there too but I can't change this. Any Ideas?

Hey... sorry about the delay. I did figure out how to reinstate DMA on the harddrives. I actually got ticked off and uninstalled the hardware and re started the computer a couple of times and voila... It was back on :-)
On to my next vexing question: All of a sudden I started burning coasters. Using the same media (Philips DVD+R 1-8x) which I had been using for a while, I can no longer burn movies at 6x (I usually burn at 4x but when pressed for time I kick it up a notch, under the understanding that the slower the better for compatibility with older dvd players). Now, this is the kicker. Once the dvd has been burnt at 6x, not even my own computer can read the disc. I would change media first (suggestions for good, better and best media?)but I would like to know if I should be looking at a possibly going going gone drive. I've had it for about 1 year.

Good media would include Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden, Sony, Fuji, Maxell (made in Japan).

Not being recognized by your PC is indicative of poor media, burning too fast, and few other things...the cheapest route right now would be to try different blanks.
