I was wondering why the PS2 can't play DVD backups without a MOD. I have a MOD and use Swap Magic Discs but I don't understand how your PS2 can tell a DVD+R DIRECT COPY from a regular PS2 DVD, but if you put in the swap discs it will. Anyone know how it really works? I figure it has to do with your game backups not taking up an entire DVD+R as all PS2 games do. I imagine that the Swap Magic disc tells your PS2 to scan til it finds a start point which is where your DVD+R has started the data burning. I could be wrong but you know this is where everyone can put an answer. Side Note, as of like my theory of it not taking up the whole dvd+r you can look at your game back up and you'll notice that the disc has a darker blue ring, and a lighter blue ring, the dark blue ring would be the portion of your dvd+r or -r, that you used and the lighter is how much is left on your disc.

the reason the ps2 wont load backups id because of the BCA or Burst Cutting Area. Which is located at the very center of the disc, the little barcode thing. Before the ps2 will load anything it will search for the BCA if its not preset it wont load. A modchip diverts the signal that tell the ps2 to check so the disc will load. Swap magic first loads and original then you swap the disc out (slidecard, fliptop) which as the ps2 doesnt register that you opened the disc tray will let you insert the backup shut the ps2 and lets it load, the ps2 thinking that the disc is still swapmagic. Im not sure how DVD-/+R movies work on ps2 but they do.

Anndrew691 is correct. There is an area on the original that your burner just can not copy. That is why PS2's have to be modded to play back ups.
Since movies do not have this area back up copies of those will play just fine on an unmodded system, but not games.
