Yes yes I know I know, DVD X Copy sucks, is outdated, and can't possibly do anything about the new Sony protections, but call me old fashioned I just like it.
(sorry about being repetitive for all those who have read my other post I just want to at least satisfy all the inevitable posts from people who hate DVD X Copy.)

That being said, has anyone ever compared DVD X Copy Platinum 4 to DVD Shrink 3.2 on a DVD requiring 80% compression using the fallowing parameters;

DVD X Copy - use advanced mode and only copy the main movie
DCD Shrink - only copy the main movie, reduce the menus to minimum quality, and replace all extra's with a picture. Also set it to deep analysis and use the high quality adaptive error compensation set to smooth

Which turns out better in terms of quality. Obviously DVD X Copy has an edge due to the fact that it doesn't waste disk space replacing extras with pictures allowing for a couple of hundred Mbytes more for the main movie. But despite that, does DVD Shrink match or beat the quality.

I know there are other ways around keeping the menu and getting rid of the extras without replacing them with pictures. But those involve using other programs and I ultimately want to know which is better, without the assistance of other programs such as IfoEdit, PgcEdit, VOBrator etc.

If ye were talking about platinum v5.0.0.13 vs shrink,i would say platinum.as to v4038 vs shrink, shrink is the winner.

also platinum v5 and shrink has no nag start up screen and v5 can do dl disks.and burn files from the hd.as v4038 can not do..

Thanks for the quick response, and sorry about the double post. I thought I searched pretty well before posting but guess not.

Thanks again

The best combo so far are AnyDVD + CloneDVD. No softwares whosoever can beat this 2. Becos these are the two which can keep on updating.
Dvdxcopy cant match a finger. It is fast, excellent copier plus trancoder. Dvd builder no doubt is a excellent programme but it will take donkey year to finish the product. If you are impatient dont use it. Inter Dvd copy is no doubt a good software but it cannot bypass the latest protection without AnyDVD. CloneDVD works best with AnyDVD so majority people favour these two programmes...
Some people will prefer to use shrink and VOB blanker, pgedit and even still image from DVD Shrink so forth... I found it very troublesome to use too many of the complicated programmes.
Stick with the two combo is the wise choice.
Only stubborn people will disagree...

I guess I'm stubborn because I use AnyDVD and Nero Recode with excellent results.
edit: @mastermoe I have the first incarnation of DVD X Copy gold and with anydvd DVD, Xpress still works.

Is DVD X Copy 50013 still available for activation. I purchased the entire X Copy line quite a while ago. I am having major problems with my main computer and will need to do a clean install, which will require re-activating the X Copy software again. Thanks for any help in this.

clonedvd2 is in fact a great program, i have it and use it from time to time, and yes, together with anydvd is the best and fastest solution for the new encryptions, and yes its ability to leave or take out whatever you want is one of the best outthere but, and a BIG BUT it is. clonedvd2 quality output CAN NOT match that of shrink and/or nero recode2; reason why i still prefer shrink or recode2 over clonedvd2. ah! that's just my little own opinion.
when it comes to dvdxcopy 123 or not, forget it.

Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

I have been using DVD Shrink from the very beginning and i also used Nero recode2 occasionally. I must agree that DVD Shrink is a very simple and good free software to use. Recode2 is not a good encry programme becos occasionally you will run into problem like in middle of encoding or copying it will freeze and it takes longer time to finish the product. I have tested out the output from the three products and found out that DVD Shrink output even with deep analysis finish products are almost the same with CloneDVD. In other words, DVD Shrink finish product and CloneDVD are almost aqual. And becos Mr. shrink is no more updating his product and CloneDVD is keep on updating.
The finish product from CloneDVD is slightly better than DVD Shrink.
and also the speed of processing is much more faster than shrink.
If you compare the two ie DVD Shrink and clonedvd2 using the same speed and same dvd media I come to a conlusion than the finish product from CloneDVD is sharper and clearly than DVD Shrink even you are using DVD Shrink in the deep analysis mode.
Well, this is how I found out. There seems to more people having problems with DVD Shrink than CloneDVD check this out..
I am not condemning DVD Shrink but just doing a comparision.
I myself love DVD Shrink very much when come to join various dvds together. In fact DVD Shrink is one of my favourite.
From the beginning I started to use CloneDVD i have got no problems at all but to DVD Shrink occassionally i ran into problems like it will stop or freeze in the midde of copying.

Strange you should say this as the same person is the author of both programs, and Recode is a much better updated program than Shrink. It is also much faster. If you are having problems with freezing then there is something wrong with your system. Here is a comparison done with Shrink and Recode they come up just about the same with a slight edge to Recode.

Yes I know DVD Shrink and recode2 is the same person but I found that when come to copy a dvd the time taken from DVD Shrink is faster than recode2 even DVD Shrink is no more updating.
Compare the three of them DVD Shrink, recode2 and CloneDVD, the fastest speed is CloneDVD follow by DVD Shrink and the last one is recode2. Well, this is my own personal experience. And I even went all the way to time it myself.
I did a check with my pc with an experience pc techican and found there is no fault. I am using p4 with 1gig of ram and my hd is 120gig and I am using benq1620pro and benq1620 with teac. Togther I have three writers in my pc. I have tested with these 3 writers and the result are the same.
I dont know about other people. Well, i speak of my own experience.
The final result is that clonedvd2 has the fastest speed and a better output than the 2.
Bcos of these I dont use recode to copy dvd anymore becos of time consuming. I only use Nero as a burning engine for my DVD Shrink when I wanted to join various dvd together.
When backing up a movie I use AnyDVD and CloneDVD for better result.

Nero Recode 2 hands down for me. Nero Recode 2 is 2 times faster than DVD Shrink period.

I can transcode a full disc movie using Nero Recode 2 with "AA" under 24 minutes.
I can transcode a full disc movie using Nero Recode 2 with "AA + HQSR" within 50 minutes.
I can transcode a full disc movie using DVD Shrink with "DA" within 45 minutes.
I can transcode a full disc movie using DVD Shrink with "DA + AEC" within 1 hr and 20 minutes.

Again, as for quality, Nero Recode 2 hands down for me. DVD Shrink and Clone can't beat Nero Recode 2, especially with "AA + HQSR + Assign best Quality to the Main Movie".

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

A big,"you are right" to what alkohol just said. nothing beats RB-pro but it takes way too long so, Nero recode 6 or 7, because of its quality output(same as shrink) and because is faster than shrink,is the best option there is.

Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

So from what I'm reading my options for best quality and speed are either

CloneDVD
or
Nero Recode 2

HMM... I'll try them out

Thanks for all your input

I have been using any dvd, clone dvd2, and DVD Shrink and I continue to have the same issue with burned disk. They burn fine but when I play them back on a dvd player they freeze up at around 38 minutes until about 44 minutes video before and after that point is fine. Any idea what is causing this.

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or show an abnormal amount of pixelisation, it is more than likely due to a bad burn.

Important!!

It is highly recommended not to use labels on your backups. Here you'll find more information regarding this issue.

Do the DVD Error Test:

To find out if the problem is created during the burning process or while playing the disc - you can test your burned discs.

Either you can use Nero to verify the quality of your discs. There is a tutorial written by blutach. Here you can find the Nero CD-DVD Speed test. The used Nero program is freeware and you don't have to have the complete Nero program to be installed.

The other variant is this one:

Download DVDInfoPro (freeware - if you like advertises) insert a burned disc and select the option "Test your media for CRC read errors".

Block Colors:

GREEN: The green blocks represent groups of blocks with no error.
WHITE: The white blocks represent a block that gave an error but a retry read was successful.
RED: The red blocks represent errors that failed even on a retry.

You got only green blocks?

If you only get green dots you know that your burning is ok and it is the player that causes the problem. That could depend on that your stand alone player don't like burned discs.

Solutions:
You could try another brand of media. You can find a list of compatible media for your stand alone player at VideoHelp.com.
Try to slow down your burning speed.
Use -R/-RW media insted of +R/+RW media or the other way around.
If you are using +R/+RW media and your burner supports it - you could try to use bitsetting. For a discussion and how-to-do explanation - visit cdfreaks.com or DVDplusRW.org.
The player could also suffer from being overheated.
Take your burned disc to a shop that sells stand alone players and test out the several brands at that location.
I got red blocks - what to do?

If you get any red blocks- you know that your burning is not ok and needs to be taken care of.

Solution 1 - A firmware update:

DVD burners optimize their ability to write to different brands of DVDs by internal "write strategies" that control the laser power and pulse settings to maximize its accuracy with each different dye formula, reflector density and plastic doping chemistry for each brand of blank DVD disc.

When a disc is inserted, the drive reads the factory media ID off the disc and queries its internal list of known disc brands and write strategies. If the disc is listed, then it uses the write strategy for that disc.

If a write strategy for a particular disc brand is not present in the drive's firmware, it tries to estimate how best to write to the disc by writing to the small re-writable "power calibration" area on each unknown disc type to see which power setting might produce best results for the unknown disc brand.

In some cases, the firmware is unable to produce reliable burning with a particular disc brand, and rejects the disc as having a "power calibration error" or "illegal disc" or a similar error. This error is generally not related to disc quality issues, but is simply a result of the drive not having the latest firmware in it that lists the particular disc brand.

From time to time, drive makers test additional brands of DVD discs and then update their firmware with new write strategies for those newly tested discs, enabling their drives to work with more brands of DVD discs.

All DVD writer owners need to frequently check with their drive manufacturer to see if there is a new firmware upgrade available for their drive. That way they can expect to enjoy working with more brands of discs, and more reliably with the discs that they already can use.

Look at your brands website to download the latest version or search for firmware at the firmware page or DVD-Makers.com.

How do I know which firmware version that is installed in the burner? Use AKA Flashman's tool to find out your current version.

Solution 2 - Try using a better media:

Having previously had successes with cheap media is no indication they're not the cause of the problem.
Their "quality control" is often not as good as other more expensive media, and you can easily end-up with a bad disc or even a bad batch of discs.

If you notice your pixelation, freezing, jumping problems at the end of the disc - it's normally a sign of bad media.

Using cheap media can also make your DVD player work harder to read the discs. This, in turn, will make it overheat, and sometimes freeze (I know, you wouldn't expect something freezing when overheating, lol).

Good media to use could be Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Fuji, Maxell or Ritek (but not Ritek G05). You find an overview and discussion about blank media and quality regarding different brands at digitalFAQ.com.

You can find a list of compatible media for your burner at VideoHelp.com.

To see who actually made the disc and the manufacture ID that you're trying to use - you can use the program DVD Identifier. This program offers a reliable method of accurately identifying the disc's REAL manufacturer. This information will also help you in determining which discs are most suitable for your DVD recorder when you compare the information from this program to what others have to say about your burner and player.

Solution 3 - Update your burning program:

Updates for CopyToDVD Nero

Possible other solutions:

Make sure your DVD-R/-RW or DVD+R/+RW is sound and clean: A small speck of dust, a scratch or fingerprint can be the difference between a successful burn and a coaster.
It is recommended to not use your computer for other tasks while burning (some even recommend re-booting before a burn, and even stopping any background programs like anti-virus...)
You are using a screen-saver.
Compress the movie a bit more, so that the media edge is not being used (on bad media, the edge can be defective and not written to or read properly). This can be achieved by lowering DVD Shrink target size: "Edit -> Preferences -> Target Size -> Custom -> 4300MB"
Try a lower burn speed (if you were using 2x or higher).
Your hard-drive(s) is heavily fragmented. Make sure to defragment it regularly.
