I stored my tower in my bedroom for about 2 years and didn't use it at all. When I plugged it in and flipped the main power switch on the back the fan started and then suddenly stopped with a loud pop and forceful (something, I only felt it) coming out the back vent. The computer promptly died and put a very acrid smoke. I let it sit for about twenty minutes and then went to turn it on and nothing happens, it is as if there is no power source.

I think that I might have fried some circuits, not sure though. Can someone tell me what happened and if it is possible to salvage any parts or even the computer it self?

Thanks

That loud pop you heard sounds like you blew the power supply, hopefully you didn't fry anything else.

if you do it yourself than disconnect all cables to drives, remove all cards & ram except for videocard & 1 stick of ram. check on the motherboard for the can shaped objects that are capacitors to make certain their tops is flat & not domed.

I bought a new power supply removed all cards, drives and sticks of ram except the video card and one stick of ram and I had the same problam. The capacitors all appear all flat on top. The cpu fan starts and contiunes to run, but the normal beep on booting doesn't occur and the power light and the processor light booth stay on. Is there anything else I can do?

I tried it again without the video card and ram. Same thing. I noticed that the red processor light doesn't come on when I have every drive except the floppy and HD connected. Any more suggestions?

The cpu is in a socket and the only markings on the motherboard are KT133TX and the computer is a Macro(most likely assembled by Macro).

Quotes for looking at my computer were over a hundred dollars so I decided to tap into the infinite knowledge of afterdawn users once more.

When my computer is turned on, there is no power to my keyboard or mouse, so I was wondering how I can fix it so I can access the bios.

thanks

ok, Is your keyboard/mouse wireless? If not make sure you have it in the right slot and if that doesn't work it could be that the slots could not be connected to the motherboard so i would check that too

My mouse is USB and I have a regular keyboard(not USB). The keyboard I was using was broken, I pulled one off another computer and it revieves power but I still can't access my bios. The computer just sits there with the fan running and the power/processor lights on.

if nothing on screen & the drives don't do the boot sequence than the bios got screwed up. might be fixable if had similar board with same manufacturer bios as in award or ami. would than be able to reflash the bios as done that a number of times.

I have a near identical pc varying only in HD capacity and video card type. How do I reflash the bios if it doesn't check any of the drives on start up?

my bios is rectangular and is soldered in place. Does that mean I can do nothing?

If nothing happens when you turn on the PC but fans moving and no activity or lights, particularly after an event like that, your CPU is very likely damaged. PCs left for several months without use can accrue deposits, sometimes damp ones that will short out the PSU violently, creating a huge amp draw that can quite literally blow the circuits of the PSU, hence the pop. Unfortunately numerous PSUs, especially old and/or cheap ones will trigger high voltages (far higher than usual) to appear at the wiring to the components in such instances, often damaging the components.

I have a similar problem - I have a gateway pc about 3 years old.
I wasn't having any problems - several weeks ago it wouldn't boot.
The power turns on, but no mouse, monitor, key board (wireless)light up. Oddly enough, it will turn on willy-nilly. I totally power it down, removing power cord, etc. and occasionally it will boot up normally - but mostly it won't boot up. Someone suggested power source failure - replace power source - any thoughts?

If things turn on, like fans spin, but there's no hardware activity, keyboard mouse monitor etc. then it means the CPU isn't active, so either it's not getting any power or it's no more. Since it boots occasionally I'm tempted to say CPU on that one.
