Graphics cards ... Which is better ??

I have recently gained a couple of video cards but am unsure which is better , although from what I can find out neither is great. If anyone could help I would be grateful. The first is an NVidia geforce fx5500 with 256RAM, but I understand this was a low end card. The second is an NVidia Geforce4 Ti500 Ultra with 64RAM, seems to have been considered an average card in its day but has way less RAM and I think it is about 3 years older. Any help please as I just can not get my head round graphics cards and comparing them.

You're pretty much trying to compare dinos with early bacteria... Both are past their era of reign and both have way different properties when it comes to performance. while the ti500 Ultra was a good card in it's era, the low end cards of the next era, already have enough power and performance to equal itself to the high end of the last era. In this case, the Fx5200 would be the one. Not only is the Fx5500 a newer card, with more pipes and a faster GPU, it has the 256MB of RAM (though don't let it confuse you... too much ram doesn't mean it's a better card). The ram comes into play only when running really high resolutions and all, but from what I've experienced with these two, the Fx5500 beats the heck out of the GeForce 4. However, there are fanatics out there who may think otherwise... that's just my opinion

Many thanks for the speedy reply IonÅphis, I just can not fathom graphics card performance. When looking to compare cards would you suggest taking stock of pipelines and GPU speed and less emphasis on RAM as a rough guide on performance camparison, but if not, could you give me some pointers on what to look for.

Pipes, pipes, pipes.... GPU speed, then pixels, then RAM, unless you run at 1280 resolutions or more

Or hows this...Get urself an ATi Graphics.They are much more reliable and never give driver issues.I know ive got an Ati X800XT Platinum Ed.Not a single issue and its incredibly fast. My mate just bought 2 XFX 7800GTX 512MB cards and the 1 blew, plus he can only use Forceware 77.77 drivers cos the later drivers dont support 64bit or the Card.

syphon thats bullsh*t. ATi cards can have just as many problems as nvidia cards it all comes down to the rest of your system.

choose whatever graphics card you like but if you want something good i wouldnt go for anything less than a 6 series nvidia, 5 series and earlier just arent worth buying these days... the price of the 6 series cards is pretty good

Hi, could anyone here recommend a good pci card? i really only want it to play half life 2 at the moment coz the 64mb onboard graphics are poor. I have an intel 845gv motherboard with onboard graphics, i dont have an agp slot on the motherboard thats why i need pci. i have seen pci-express, will this be compatible with any pci slot? Thanks for any replies.
