For console reliability and DVD-R's, I'd rate TY ahead of Verb's. I've had nothing but success with TY's from personal experience, recommendations, and my time here on AD. Verb's are good, but TY is superior. That's not just my opinion, but those of more knowledgeable burners like DocTY and Alkohol. There's no difference in quality between the 4x and 8x. The 4x are cheaper, the 8x are a little more expensive, and a little safer bet if you want to burn at 4x. I use the 8x Silver Thermal TYG02's posted there. Wouldn't trade them for the world. They've served me extremely well. I've played Dragon Quest VIII (backed up on TYG02) 150+ hrs with like 3 to 5 skips the entire time. That's a skip every 30 to 50 hours. I can live with that. Chances are, you can to. Cheers!
Yeah it just comes down to what your burner can handle and user preference. I get better burns at 4x. I get fewer PIE's every time. I get a gaurunteed max PIE spike of 5 or fewer burning at 4x to 8x TYG02 discs. It's set it and forget with the TY's, I trust them implicitly. Never had a coaster with 160+ burns to TYG02. You won't go wrong either way.
I only burn at 2x when burning to DL Verbatim DVD+R media. I don't bother burning at 2x with my Sony DRU-810A, it gets great results at 4x on 8x Taiyo Yuden media. I was using a Sony DRX 530UL which was on loan from a friend. With that POS I would burn at 2x because it was older and I didn't have much choice if I wanted playable backups. I would rip games at 1x and burn at 2x. Trust me, you don't want to have to deal with that. It's too slow, about an an hour and a half per backup. If your burner can handle burning at 4x, by all means do. You know better than anybody what speeds your burner can handle.
you can get 4X if you like but i would go with an 8X myself.
and since most Verbatim disc carry a Taiyo Yuden media code there is not going to be much difference really.
Either choice is going to work out well usually.
i have a 50 pack of verbatim DVD-R azo that i got for $14 @ bestbuy (pretty good deal, too bad it's not $40), and they're made by mcc something. the mitsubishi manufacturer
That's a good deal. MCC=Mitsubishi Chemicals. They're top notch, second only to the TYG01/02/03, YUDENxxx media, in my opinion. Verb DVD+R's are very close to TY DVD+R's, from what I've read. There's a bit of a disparity with DVD-R's, TY is better by a good amount there. That's a good deal on Verb's, wish my stupid local stores would stock em. I pay $30 for a 50 pack of Sony MIJ TY DVD+R's. Twice as much for about the same quality isn't worthwhile. Oh well, I do love my TY's. Cheers!
