I've been reading alot about switching Hard Drives and I think I've mostly got it. I just want to run it by you guys to make sure this will work.

So far, I've got a 40GB Maxtor running everything. I got a new 160 WesternDigital and threw it in to use as a slave drive until I could figure out how to switch it to the master.

I want to put everything from my 40 onto my 160,and then completely get rid of the 40. take it completely out of the computer.

How would you guys do it ?

Well i think you can get a RAID cable and set it to RAID 0 so all the information on your 40 is shared with the other.....OR i think CloneHDD is a program where you can do it but i am not familiar with it

If he sets up those drives in a RAID config, he'll lose 120gigs from the 160. RAID setups go by the smaller drive size.

One way you can do it, is to partition your 160 into two parts, 40, and 120. Then, clone the 40gig drive to the 40gig partition using Norton Ghost, or other cloning software. Some newer titles will even clone the 40 straight over to the 160.

Im kinda confused. lets see if i get this.

take my 160 and partition it into 40 and 120. then i go about cloning my 40. then i can take the clone and throw it in the [40/120]. then i can take out the 40 ? and the 160 will start up with everything on it ?

is this right?

ive never done this before and i dont want to mess anything up and loose my files.

right now, my 160 is a slave drive. i dont know how i partitioned it. i did it a few months ago. what do i do about that ? it says it has 149 usuable space.

also is this a problem, my 40 is fat32 and my 160 is ntfs.

149gig is probably right because if do a properties on it, should show 160gig total. doesn't matter if have fat32 on 40gig & ntfs on 160gig. get clone hd or norton ghost 1st

my uncle was talking about running norton ghost from DOS but i think he might have used an older version. 2003 offers a Windows-based interface which is what im using but he doesnt know how to work with that and neither do i. i can only find sites about DOS setup. can some one help me with this ?

Go to western digitals site, to their support, downloads section. Download western digital data lifeguard. Free, works great.

put both drives in install ghost 2003 (the new ghost is a nightmare)
and clone the 40 onto the 160

take the 40 out and the 160 will run as if it was always the drive

ok im having some problems here. it shouldnt be this hard.

i got a new norton ghost and its completely different than what i tried before.

it cloned my 40 onto my 160 and then it restarted. it said it was sucessful. my computer works but when i try and click on "my computer" everything freezes up and it never lets me see my C Drive.

ok i took out the 40 and had just the 160 in. it ran fine until it found a cmos error and then it went to a whole bunch of weird little colored squares. what is this ?
