Just curious, is it still against the law to back-up a dvd copy that you bought and now own? I coudln't find anything that said "yes its ok to make your own copy for personal use and not for distribution."

Im in the united states, also curious have there been any arrest or anything by blockbuster b/c myself im in college and i know many people that get a movie pass and illegally make back-up copies from blockbuster, does blockbuster put any controls in place to prevent this, if i was part of blockbuster I certainly would.

But when i make back-ups of personally owned dvd's i still feel like i am doing somethign illegal which bothers me. anyone else feel this way also?

In the USA it is Legal to make backup copies of your personal owened DVD under the fair use act.

However it is agaisnt the law to circumvent anti-piracy measures.

So long story short you can make backups of DVD's you own just as long as you dont circumvent the copy protection that is placed on the DVD's from the manufactures which is pretty much imposible. So once you use a program to get around the copy protection to bebale to copy the DVD you have commited a crime in the USA.

There is no way that any Video store would bebale to tell if you made a backup or not of a DVD.

What is wrong on discussing the laws of Backingup DVD's in this forum?

As of Video Stores having somthing in place to tell if you have copied a DVD or not this has been discussed in multipull threads in the past so why is it a problem now?

Anyone should know it is agaisnt the law to Backup a DVD you dont own but there is no anti-piracy mesures in place that would show if a DVD has been Backedup or not.

If I have said anything in my post that are agaisnt the rules then edit my post and give me a warning. I have said nothing in my post that hasent already been discused in the past in other threads.

Below is a few threads talking about the Blockbuster chip and crap just showing its been asked and discussed before.

yah and i was talking more about blockbuster controls in place to monitor customer rentals. Obviously something is up when someone goes into the store once or twice a day and has 50 rentals a months as well as online when dvd's are shipped back the same day they are received. I know for a fact they keep track of all rentals you ever have . .. but as long as your paying they don't care

Before I even had A DVD burner, the Alberston store had a 21 buck all you can rent monthly thing. I was there every day after school getting three movies.

If you don't have a burner, and you got the blockbuster pass, you would be tempted to watch the movies as fast as you can to get new ones.

So nothing could be up, or something could be up. What are they gonna do about it.

no one should be blasted, if you want to stoop to that level then do it.

my simple question was asked as far as legal policy of making back-ups of your own personal copies cause I felt that would be wrong also

thelox714, depending on what country you live in determines whether copying your cd/dvd is legal or not. copying rentals is not legal but this thread is about owned disks so can be openly discussed.

Digital Millennium Copyright Act

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) is a United States copyright law. The act criminalizes production and dissemination of technology that can circumvent measures taken to protect copyright, not merely infringement of copyright itself, and heightens the penalties for copyright infringement on the Internet. Passed on May 14, 1998 by a unanimous vote in the United States Senate and signed into law by President Bill Clinton on October 28, 1998, the DMCA amended title 17 of the US Code to extend the reach of copyright, while limiting the liability of Online Providers from copyright infringement by their users.

On May 22, 2001 the European Union passed the EU Copyright Directive or EUCD, similar in many ways to the DMCA.

DMCA Title I: WIPO Copyright and Performances and Phonograms Treaties Implementation Act

DMCA Title I has two major portions, one of which includes works covered by several treaties in US copy prevention laws and gave the title its name and the other which is often known as the DMCA anti-circumvention provisions. The latter implemented a broad ban on the circumvention of copy prevention systems and required that all analogue video recorders have copy prevention built in.
[edit]

DMCA Title II: Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act

DMCA Title II, the Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act, creates a safe harbor for online service providers (OSPs, including ISPs) against copyright liability if they adhere to and qualify for certain prescribed safe harbor guidelines and promptly block access if they receive a notification from a copyright holder or their agent. It also includes a counter-notification which requires restoration of the material and a provision for subpoenas to identify alleged infringers.
[edit]

DMCA Title III: Computer Maintenance Competition Assurance Act

DMCA Title III modified section 117 of the copyright title so that those repairing computers could make certain temporary, limited copies while working on a computer.
[edit]

DMCA Title IV: Miscellaneous Provisions

DMCA Title IV contains an assortment of provisions:

* Clarified and added to the duties of the Copyright Office.
* Added ephemeral copy for broadcasters provisions, including certain statutory licenses.
* Added provisions to facilitate distance education.
* Added provisions to assist libraries with keeping copies of sound recordings.
* Added provisions relating to collective bargaining and the transfer of movie rights.

[edit]

DMCA Title V: Vessel Hull Design Protection Act

DMCA Title V added sections 1301 through 1332 to add protection for boat hull designs.

As useful articles whose form cannot be cleanly separated from their function, boat hull designs were formerly not protected under copyright law.

Reform

There are efforts in Congress to modify the Act. Rick Boucher, a Democratic congressman from Virginia, is leading one of these efforts by introducing the Digital Media Consumers? Rights Act (DMCRA).

A prominent bill related to the DMCA is the Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act (CBDTPA), known in early drafts as the Security Systems and Standards Certification Act (SSSCA). This bill, if it were passed, would have dealt with the devices used to access digital content and would have been even more restrictive than the DMCA.
