I've been tryin to figure out the Grandia III cutscene problem. Now a lot of people have this problem, and there's 2 people I've seen that don't have the issue.

What I'm wondering is how many people got the Echelon release compared to ripping it themselves. I have the Echelon release, and it's already shrunk. What I'm wondering is if somewhere they screwed up on organizing the image or somethin, or maybe it didnt even have to be shrunk.

I've burned em onto Maxell DVD+Rs through Decrypter, and while they play better, they ain't perfect and still cutout.

I was just gonna rent it, rip it myself, and go with that, but no place around here has it for rent...

I'm just wantin to get this workin great, because the gameplay is awesome and the cutscenes are awesome.

Any input that can further pinpoint the problem would be great.

Burned the Echelon release on Maxell 8x DVD-R at 4X speed. No Problems and the game runs fine. I'm currently 10 hours into it and no problems yet.

It could be a media issue. I got the Echelon release and I also got an original copy to backup. I haven't backed up my original, but the version I burned plays fine on my modded PS2. What's the Media ID of the discs you're using?

91. Q. What is the Media ID of a DVD and how can I find it?
A.The Media ID of a DVD is the true measure of it's quality. It contains prerecorded info about the disc's manufacturer. The quality of the disc will vary depending on the media code. The media code isn't visible on the disc or the packaging. To check the media ID, Open DVD Decrypter, insert your disc, and check what it says under Media ID or Manufacturer ID. You can also use a program called DVD Identifier which is very useful. You can find it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...
Compare the Media ID to this link: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

I'm usin Maxell DVD+R (ID came up as RITEK somethin) which according to the list RITEK is 2nd class. I'm just gonna order a stack of Yudens and try that. Figure it's gotta be the media if it's not the release. I really dont wanna have to shell out 50 for a new copy. Either way, anybody got a good source for Yuden's? I've been lookin on the net, but I want somethin real, cause it looks like fake Yuden's are pretty abundant.

86. Q. Where can I find good deals on legit Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's?
A. http://www.supermediastore.com
Great List of Merchants locally, online, in the U.K., etc:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/buyerguides/buymedia.htm

106. Q. Where I can find top notch Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media locally?
A. This is somewhat of a crap shoot. Big manufacturer's like Fuji, Sony, and Maxell have at one point past or present payed Taiyo Yuden to manufacture media for them. The big companies slap their name on the label even though the discs were manufactured in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. These discs will always be made in Japan. Authentic TY media isn't made anywhere else. Even if it says Made in Japan on the label, there is no gauruntee of getting authentic Taiyo Yuden media. You could still end up with Sony or Fuji media codes. Hence why I said this is a crap shoot. Places like Comp USA, Office Depot, Sam's Club, and Staples will carry Made In Japan branded discs. Again there is no way to know for sure from the package whether these are authentic Taiyo Yuden's. If you don't want to risk getting non TY discs, you can find 50 packs of Verbatim in the afore mentioned chain stores. One other alternative is the Made in Japan High Grade Maxell DVD+R's. They will say Made in Japan on the label and "High Grade" as well. These are excellent media. Remember when using DVD+R's, it's best you have a burner that supports booktyping/bitsetting, and a v.4 PS2 or later. Much thanks goes to kivory666 aka "docTY" for this information. He is indeed the Taiyo Yuden master. The best place to get authentic Taiyo Yuden media is from reputable online vendors like http://www.supermediastore.com http://www.rima.com http://www.meritline.com or http://www.newegg.com

i am using the same media as you (RITEK-R03-02), but i burned the Echelon release at 1x speed, try doing that becasue i don't have any problems with the game so far.

i have many games burnt on that particular media and 6 months down the line they still play fine in my PS2, at first yes i was getting a lot of coasters but i realised that i had to upgrade the firmware for my burner and now i get perfect burns always. btw Nero booktypes the media automatically for me before i burn, same with DVD Decrypter.

RitekG05 is okay, but in my opinion it's going south in a hurry. I've read too many reports of RitekG05 (mainly printables) failing to consider them adequate media for the PS2. I backed up my original copy of Grandia to Yuden000T02 at 4x with Alcohol 120% (TY 8x DVD+R's) booktyped to DVD-ROM and it plays perfectly. That's not a knock on anybody for using Ritek, merely my personal preference is towards TY. Cheers!

the ones i buy are not printables, i don't buy printables becasue i know printables always seems to stink of this horible stuff lol and they are very hard to write on them afterwards. i think ritek are fine for me, and they are cheap too, it is better than buying stinky memorex at least. like i said before i am yet to run into any problems with them. it's good for you that you buy the best media for you ps2 but sometimes i like to save money, thats the reason why i went into the backup scene. maybe i will give Taiyo Yuden a go when my current batch of media run out.

Yeah I have a v.4 PS2, so good media is probably more important to me that most people. My laser is on borrowed time. I need to baby it. Plus 160+ burns to TYG02/Yuden000T02 with 0 coasters, no reason to switch with results like that.

I just found my mom's secret stash of lightscribe Verbs, and i tried Grandia on one of those and it's flawless. So far there isn't any skipping I've noticed. I still want to get some ty's though. But the other thing i noticed is i was using this standard DVD-RW drive on my laptop (dell crap... no brand) compared to a Sony DRU drive i bought for my desktop. I updated the firmware to booktype on the Sony, and my laptop still burns better copies than the Sony drive. Same media, same speeds, just crap comes outta the Sony.

I dont know, ty's aint lookin to expensive, think they runnin $23 ish for like 50. That's not bad for top o the line media.

Media definately seems to be the top issue though. Does anybody know the specific kind of media Playstation uses? Like brand/code of the PS2 discs?

They use pressed DVD-ROM discs, I don't know how or if it's possible for joe sixpack to obtain those, even if it were, you'd need a press burner to burn them. Press burners cost 10,000's of dollars. So just stick with some Taiyo Yudens. You can get a much better deal than 50 for $23. Order them online. You can get 100 4x TY DVD-R's for $25+shioping: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-4x-dvd-r-media-silver-...

or

100 8x TY DVD-R's for $35 with free ground shipping: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-...

That second one is a great deal. It seems like the 100 spindles aren't on sale often. I'd snatch up those 8x TY DVD-R's. I've got 140+ backups on those with 0 coasters. Recently I switched to Yuden000T02, TY 8x DVD+R's. There's no difference in quality, I just wanted some variety. There's no difference in quality between the 4x and 8x Taiyo Yuden's. You'd just want to burn each at half speed, so 2x on the 4x or 4x on the 8x. I burn all my PS2 backups at 4x, so I prefer the 8x TY media. It's up to you though.
