Codec Problems Please Help!

I am using windows XP on a laptop bought this week, i have lots of various video files stored on my external HD and realised that i would need various codecs for them all to play.

I started looking around on the net (as i dont have a clue what i am doing) and found that there are lots of different opinions/advice out there.

Instead of downloading the ones i needed, i made the mistake of downloading a pack. Now most of my films play with the green mess on them and i dont know what to do, i realise the first thing i should do is to delete the codecs but thats where the trouble starts.

I have followed various instructions and tried to delete them through the control panel>Sounds&Audio>Codec properties and tried to delet them from there but they keep re-appearing and i dont have a clue how to get rid, i briefly saw some info on deleting registry files but again dont know what im doing.

Any advice would be great, firstly on how to get rid of the codec pack and secondly which codecs to use from scratch.

System restore?

Which codecs you should get, depends on what you want to play/encode. Other option is a player with built in decoders like mplayer or VLC.

Ok I now its another pack but I find it very good and it will Detect and overwrite damaged codecs at this point iou dont gave much too lose

I suggest you install that codec pack again in order to correct the damage you've done by deleting some files and then look on the site of the pack for a safe method of how to uninnstall that particular codec pack.

After doing this I would suggest you use the FFDShow to play your video files or use the video lan client player http://www.videolan.org/ which is free and does not need these codec collections and a secong playing option without installing codecs is the mplayer from http://www.mplayerhq.hu/
