I am having trouble burning my backup file to my dvd's at a speed of 4x. I select 4x but it still only burns at 1x. Is there something i'm missing. I'm burning to ridata dvd-r 8x G05. My dvd burner can burn at 16x.

try a firmware update for your burner
and try better quality media verbatim or taiyos

Could be a setting problem in device manager.
open device manager and find the tree for your secondary Ide channel, click properties and check that DMA is enabled in advance settings.
This is the setting you should have for the channel

I agree with both philraz and byngo, but you don't need better media. G05 work very well! The only other thing I could think of is to make sure that you shut off the internet connection and all other unnecessary programs while you burn. I had this same problem with my old pc.
