ozzy, its the purple OS disk that i used to put XP on it. i dont think u need the other disks because the others install the hardware for my dell which would be usless on the 98.

The 6 disks that have been referred to are floppy disks that you have to make to boot xp into recovery / reinstall mode. However, if you have a bootable CD or better an old 98/Me boot floppy you won't need them.

No Im stating the 6 disks. The last recovery discs was I see was a set of 6 for a hp and that was what I was referring too. Im assuming Dell is the same...

Well XP recovers off 6 floppes. The disks will have the M$ logo on them if they're boot disks. However, if they are FDs then they wont install XP for you, only boot the recovery options. Probably what HP/Dell intended, since they're bound by the low-cost OEM license.

no, i never made recovery disks. i know what ur talking about cause i did that to my friends computer. i never made recovery cds becuase i have a external hard drive. those 6 disks is not what u need to put xp on the 98 computer. i used the purple OS cd, which then i cant activate because its not the same computer that the OS cd is made for. ozzy you said

You would have to modify the restore disc so winblows install doesnt know its a oem disc. Then hopefully the key that goes with the restore disc isnt used on any pc and then you can activate it. If not there are <cough> <cough> humm evil things we cant mention on ad to make winblows think its activated and its legit so you can use it and d/l updates. It can be done as all my pcs are <cough> <cough> humm not quite original windows...LOL!:>
thats what im trying to find out is disable the activation by editing the recovery cd.

Well not only do I not know how to do this, but you're editing software to bypass security, which is illegal, so I couldn't tell you anyway. There are places to find software that'll do the job for you (fool the OS into thinking it's been cracked) but it usually leaves the windows update service in a semi-usable state, such that you wont be able to install every update, and soon it would become an open door to spyware and malware of all kinds. This approach does work and I've done it, but only use it in conjunction with a hefty arsenal of security software.

Did you already get the restore cd installed and got to the welcome screen then right? Ok if so try activating normally or calling ms...the number is provided....to activate. Just because this software was activated before dont mean you cant activate it again. I have one one number I have actived 50 times so far....just tell them you are reinstalling due to virus and this isnt installed on any other machine. Then you should be good....:>

Absolutely right. WGA is generally a piece of <insert profanity here> because it's easy to fool, and just creates a worse experience for the user who does pay good money for everything.

I've ran into a problem that is similar to this when I tried to install XP onto my labtop, it says that the code won't work and wouldn't get the new one through the internet. All I had to do was to call MS and ask them for a new code. Just make sure that you say you're reinstalling it onto the DELL computer, and they will give you a new code that will work. Hope that helps.
