Okay, I recently got a fliptop ps2 (version 3... I think!), and I have been using TDK DVD+R 1-8x to backup the games, which I am led to believe is a reliable media . Now most of the games have a problem of some sorts: eg. black, stuttering intro, delay in changing weapons, or dragon quest and fahrenheit with slow loading times.

But some games such as fifa street 2 suikoden 3 and ffXII demo are working perfectly. I am presuming it is due to the fact that I am using DVD+r's (my burner only reads this type of disc) on a v3 ps2. But after reading other threads I have a few questions:

1) How come some of the games are not working, whilst some of them are, surely if it was the media problem, wouldn't they all have problems, (or is this a stupid way of looking at it!?)
2) I have tried to booktype the discs, but both nero, and dvd decrypter won't allow me to do this, (although alcohol 120% allows me to check the booktype box, but the burnt disc won't read!)Why am I not allowed to booktype, is it the disc's that I am using or is it my burner, which is a HP 300N DVD+R/+RW writer, version 5.1.2535.0

If it is the burner, can it have some sort of downloaded upgrade to allow it to booktype. If not, does anybody have any advice for a cheap, but reliable burner that allows DVD+R to be booktyped to DVD-Rom?

Ok, first things first... when you say that you can't booktype with Nero, do you mean that it won't let you check the checkbox or set to automatically booktype in the options? if so then my guess is that your drive doesn't support bitsetting(booktype)

Most obvious solution that springs to my mind is to do what you thought and get a new burner, then you will have several options, which is to continue using DVD+R and booktype them to dvd-rom with the new drive and see if that works... or get some DVD-R and see if that works.

But before you do that, I would suggest getting some better quality media (I know tdk are ok, but it still might make a difference) from taiyo yuden or verbatim and see if they work on the games you're having problems with, then if it doesn't work you haven't lost anything because you can still buy the new burner and use the remaining discs in booktyping config.

I use an NEC burner and never have any probs with media... hope that helps you.

Thanks for replying, i was beginning to think it would never be answered. Now to answer your question Nero won't let me check the checkbox, so I'm pretty sure i can't booktype, but on one random two year old forums page via a google search, some guy wrote that he booktyped his disc with this writer but I think he was chatting grade bull plop!

I take your point about buying vernatim DVD+R's but, fate has just made a decision for me to buy a new burner because my writer has just packed up! I'm trying to make a simple data cd and the burner reads the disc but says error in write process! It won't burn anymore! It's fecked up!

I will ask in the other forums about this problem, but I'm sure it's messed. Well it's off to get a new DVD+ and -R writer from ebay, atleast that way I get to choose which type of disc I want to use!

Ok no worries, a word of advice though.. I wouldn't buy a dvd writer from ebay, get it from a reputable source instead, that way if there's any problems they can be sorted out as there's a guarantee period, usually around 2-3 years I think, and dvd writers are cheap now anyway at around £30 ($52) for a brand new dual format, dual layer 16x max dvd writer... anyway your choice, just trying to help you.. good luck with it.

As I siad before.. I use an NEC burner, the ND3520A to be exact, but the newer versions are good too.. I've never had any problems with it and burned a truckload of DVDs and CDs with it and it's still going strong around 14 months later.. the main thing is to keep the firmware up to date with any burner you're using so that it's up to date with the latest media too.
