Just got a new HP and have been burning like crazy, been reading about updateing firm ware. What is it and should I do it and how offten? Thanks again

firmware is the software that actualy tells your burner how to work follow the link in my sig to the firmware downloads

The firmware of your drive is basically a software put in to your hardware. In other words and as described by this site's glossary, it is the operating system of your DVD burner.

The way to know whether you need to update it is to check your drive's manufacturer's website and check for firmware updates. It's always good to have the latest version.

Don't worry though... It's not something that gets updated every day or so and if your drive is fairly current, chances are it's still using the most recent firmware.
