I have a computer that recently burned out on me... powersupply and motherboard. It will take a 478socket but I don't know if the processor is still good are not. Do you think the processor went out with the motherboard. I need to do this fast because the family is starting to ask to use my computer lol. I just wanted to know what you guys think should I get a motherboard and cpu or just the motherboard.

Hi dickeyjay, Its going to be hard to tell if the CPU got hit or not without testing it in a known good motherboard. If you don't have access to another PC to test the CPU it might just be better to get both new. There are usually good combo deals out there if you look around for both the MB and CPU sold together. I think moderator ddp does PC repairs also. Maybe check with him to see if he has any other tricks that may help you. I do repairs but its hard to make suggestions or find problems without hands on if you know what I mean. Good luck.

I agree, I have found some good deals on combo's. I think I will just get both. I have looked on TigerDirect and New Egg. Any other suggestions.

Those are the 2 I usually deal with. I use NewEgg more these days because their shipping is a little better, but either one will have good deals. I order blank media from Meritline.com but they sell some hardware also.

Have you tried just replacing the power supply? I've had a machine die like this and the mb was just fine- just a dead pwr supply. In the event you have or know you're dead w/the pwr supply and mb, the components- cpu, ram, (anything that was connected to that mb), hd, etc, is suspect for damage depending on what took you down. Since power overload usually makes devices 'dead,' you're in a better 50/50 with a new board to plug things in one at a time to see what didn't get whacked verses harm your new board. This can work the other way though, there's just no way to know for sure if you can't check devices electronically (who really can w/out sophisticated equipment? and is why the plug-n-play 'test' is your only option.

Goto www.pricewatch.com to 'price' new 'stuff.' To 'use' pricewatch, read up on faq basics (not hard) about dealing with vendors listed at pw and how they sell stuff- restocking fee's, returns, etc. With ALL vendors that advertise there you'll want to use your brain in dealing with electronic's retailer's this way. Once done though, I've found and bought from plenty of 'solid' retailers, never had any problems, and found places otherwise I bought from again I never knew about to begin with. Good luck.
