You can do it in shrink, which is the easiest way I've found.
You set the set the stat point then the end point using the preview screen and then save files to hdd.
I haven't got shrink loaded at present, but I think you need to use the re-author function.

I'd like to recommend a wonderful DVD ripper to you. It comes with a tutorial as well, which is most helpful! And the free download lets you rip 10 minutes at a time. Which means, you can use it over and over again for all the clips you need for free, as long as you're not wanting more than ten minutes at a time, and you're not wanting the whole movie. Perfect for music vids. If you want to purchase it, it's only about $35. Not very expensive.

It's very easy to locate the individual scenes to rip from the DVD. Simply watch that scene on your Power DVD player or Windows Media Player, and note your "time index". When you're in AoA, select "movie clip", and it will take you to a time line. You simply drag the slider to the time index needed. Easy peasy!

Here's the link:

http://www.aoamedia.com/dvd-to-divx.htm

It's called AoA DVD Ripper (http://www.aoamedia.com/dvd_ripper.htm).

You'll need to download the video codecs "DivX" or "Xvid" to get the best result. The link I gave you has the tutorial on it, and it's so simple. You can rip from your DVD in 3 easy steps!!! Scroll down to find it.

There is a whole guides section on this web site which talks you through the whole process with various tools avaiable.
It all depends on what quality you want the copies to be and if you are prepared to spend money or only use freeware.
DVD Decrypter is an essential tool in my book (still available on some sites)
ANYDVD is essential to keep up with latest copy protections because it is very compatible with other software, easy to use and always updated.
Shrink with Nero or Decrypter to burn.
Worth looking at dvd rebuilder and either procoder 2.0 or CCE for top quality backups.
lastly look at your media and burner, good quality burners are worth the money as the burn quality is superior to cheap models, also use good disks for quality playbacks and for time length of integrity on disks.
Taiyo Yuden are the best disks period, followed closely by Verbatim.
