Firstly, I've been hovering around here for about 2 month, but I've just signed up...so first post!
1) I have opened up ports 6881~6889 on Windows firewall, but this has had no effect. I use peerguardian, how do I open up ports on that? 2) I have a simple Speedtouch 330 modem, not a router. Will this cause any problems? 3) I have seen people talking about a safe_peer plugin...what is this for and will I need it etc? 4) Is there anything else I should do to get better speeds than 4kb/s?
First off, what are you goin to use, d/l wise? a BT client, or a p2p one?
on to your questions:
1)you might want to try a different port range (50000 and up)if you plan on using bittorrent, or just use port 1720 for traffic.
peerguardian isn't a firewall, just a packet blocker, doesn't work with open ports
2)don't know that modem, check http://www.portforward.com to see if it might have a built in router or NAT
3)Safepeer is an Azureus plugin that does the same thing Peerguardian does, so you won't be needing it.
4)If using BT, try using private sites/trackers (see the invites thread @ the top of this forum for site names and possible invites)
and there's always the fact that the more people are on a torrent/download, the higher it's up/down speeds will be
