I've got a brand new NEC ND-3550A that won't recognize anything put into it.

--I've uninstalled it from the device manager and let windows reinstall it.
--I've tried it with burned CD's and DVD's, and retail CD's and DVD's.
--The device manager says the device is working properly.
--I've also double checked all the internal connections.

Could it be a bad drive? Does anyone have anything else I should check before I send it back?

The reason I'm suspicious that its not a bad drive is that last year I put a TDK 420N into this system, and it has the same problems, but only with some disks....

occasionly you need to reset your bios defaults after installing new hardware its not common but worth a try check to make sure your jumper blocks on the new drive and on any other device on that ide chanel are set correctly it never hurts to install a new ide ribbon cable as sometimes a connection can be broken when the are unplugged

Hmmm, something else I noticed, while going through and checking the DMA modes...

My device manager lists 3 primary IDE channels, 3 secondary channels, and 3 Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controllers!

Is this a problem?

its hard to say without nowing your mother board brand and model they may have somthing to do with sata or scsi if your board has neither of those then remove them and reboot and let windows reinstall the devices
just re reading your post and it doesnt seem right particuarly this one

I removed all 3 secondary IDE channels, and let Windows reinstall. It put all 3 back in.

I've also RMA'ed the drive, I'm going to try an LG and see if it acts the same....

Thanks for all the help
