Hey guys, I'm having some problems backing up my copies of Madden '06 and DBZ Tenkaichi. So far I've tried using Nero, Alcohol 120%, and DVD Decoder. In each program Madden produces a disk read error at 76% while ripping the ISO file. Tenkaichi produces a disk read error as well at 25% in each program during the iso ripping process. I've tried cleaning the disks and retried the ripping process several times. Each time the disk read errors are produced at the same sectors. If this is some sort of copy write protection, how would I get around it? I'm sorry if this is an ignorant question but I have searched thourougly online and through your forums. I have found nothing resembling this problem. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

PS I'm thinking what they do is put in bad sectors deliberately. So when you play it in the ps2 it never tells the ps2 to read those sectors but when you rip an iso image it has to read every sector.

No, its not some new protection or anything, something is just wrong with your discs. Even if it doesn't look like anything is wrong with your disc, there still can be an error on it.

The disks will read in my PS2. They are brand new.

that doesn't matter, your computer is more picky than the ps2.

Is there any way I could clean them or increase my chances of the disks being read correctly?

Sometimes small errors occur during the making of the disc that the ps2 can get by, but your ps2 cant. You could try turning on ignore read errors in dvd decrytper and see if it gets past that spot.

I went to tools - settings - I/O, the clicked on ignore read errors. Was this the correct setting to modify? I tried with the setting selected and no luck. Is there anything else that could be causing this problem? Also, windows recognizes the disk and allows me to explore the files contained therein. Perhaps this is irrelevant but I thought it might be worth mentioning.

there is nothing else i can think of. My computer read both those games perfectly, so i know they didn't put some kind of protection on them.

What program and version did you use to backup Madden and DBZ?

Use Alcohol 120%. DVD Decrypter is extremely picky. It may take awhile to finish with Alcohol 120%, but it'll finish. There's only been two games I couldn't rip with Alcohol 120%, Mafia and disc one of Devil May Cry 2.

88. Q. How do I burn PS2 DVD games with Alcohol 120%?
A. Ripping the game to your Hard Drive:
1. Insert your disc.
2. Open Alcohol 120%.
3. Click Image Making Wizard.
4. Check Ignore read errors, select your recorder, leave the never seperate box alone.
5. Click Next. Select a destination for the game. Click Start.
Once the process is complete, you'll get an mds and an mdf file. Click finish, if necessary.

Burning the game to DVD:
1. Insert your blank disc.
2. Right click the mdf file.
3. Select Image Burning Wizard.
4. Select your recorder, set the write speed to 4x.
5. Click next.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I tried using it and it get's a read error at the same spot. However, it starts going through sectors sequentually. Should I just let it keep going through sectors until it finds a readable one?

Yes. If it takes awhile, set it to rip while you're off doing something or before you go to bed. Sometimes I've let it go 6-8 hours before I can get a usable image from a game.

I let it go all night (just woke up) and no go. It's been 8 hours. I guess my disks must be pretty messed up, I'll see if I can take them back. Thanks for the help.

Yeah must be. I let ATV Off Road Fury go for like 12 hours before I got a usable image. I haven't tested my backup of it yet. I stopped Mafia around 12 hours, and just got an original copy that wasn't so terribly scratched. I don't worry about letting my burner go that long, if you think about it, it's barely spinning when there's massive read errors. Everytime I've let it go that long, neither my burner, nor the game was hot. Now how much strain does that put on the laser? I don't know. I got my burner at Wal-Mart, so I kinda throw caution to the wind in that regard. I have a little motorized Memorex buffer deal I got for $20 at Wally World which works pretty well for terribly scratched discs.
