Well you can always run around differnet websites that have all parts to a computer, and build your own.. I selected most of mine on www.zipzoomfly.com not my video card, because right now I'm looking at the Sapphire X800GTO2 which zipzoomfly does not carry sapphire. I've become a big fan of that website though and their deals, another website you should check out is www.newegg.com and www.tigerdirect.com
When you go through selecting components you want for your system, just keep in mind the basic things you need for a computer to run, and then you expand from there.

Harddrive Disc (HDD)
Motherboard (Mobo)
Processor (CPU)
Moniter
Keyboard
Mouse
*And operating system, but this is a PC hardware discussion, so I guess we are just talking about Hardware.
Some mother boards have an onboard video card, which on your base system, office use, would be a great money saver. But these onboard video cards are very inexpensive and cannot be used for ANY newer games at all.
On the mid-range system, expecially if you are looking at AMD, make sure you get a socket 939 MOBO, the 754's are a little cheaper, but they are also only making semprons for the 754 from here on out, so if you ever want to upgrade, you would have to end up swapping out the MOBO as well.
Also in the mid range system make sure you get a board that supports PCI-E 16x, it's the new video card format, and pretty soon no more AGP cards will be made, plus most video cards that have both types, the AGP and PCI-E, the PCI will perform better and be cheaper.
Really for every computer you will need the core 8 things, but you also have to keep in mind, printers, scanners, speakers (inless you are satisfied with the dinky ones that might come in your moniter) USB cards, Firewire Cards, Network cards, and many other little knick nacks that have great uses. If you ask 200 people to design a computer you will get roughly 200 different computers with different combinations of processors, motherboards, there are so many different brands of MOBO's that all basically do the same thing, but many people will swear by a certain brand because they have had good experiance with them. The world of building your own computer is a vast one with so many different choices and scenarios and budgets.
