First, sorry this is posted again, but I think it belongs in this Forum and not the "one-click or DVD +R for advnaced users" forum.

I'm wondering what software will allow me to rip a DVD movie and control the file size. I know this will be tied to video quality, but I still want to be able to set the image quality and video size (600 x 800, 480 x 768, etc.)

I have tried AoA DVD Ripper and DVD XCopy - but both end states are at least 2 GB. I want each movie under 1GB and I want to watch driectly from my harddrive on a laptop, not the DVD drive.

Thanks,

This is just the way I would do it (using tools widely available). I would first rip the movie using DVDFab Decrypter (www.DVDIdle.com). I would use this because it can rip protected discs without software like AnyDVD or DVD43Free running. I would then open up DVD Shrink. Once in DVD Shrink select EDIT, then PREFERENCES. Underneath were it says "Target DVD Size" I would open up the drop down menu an select "Custom". Then to the right of this menu there is a white box with "MB" next to it change this to 1,000 (1GB) or whatever size you want. Select the main movie files in shrink, and hit backup. In the resulting pop-up window the first option is something like "Output or Destination" select "ISO Image File" NOT " ISO Image File Burn w/ Decrypter". Then hit ok/backup and after it is all done you will have a ISO image file of 1GB (or whatever size you specified in the Preferences window) you can then mount this image using many tools. One notably being Daemon Tools. If I made this "guide" to vague I can go into more detail. ttyl

I don't use DVD X Copy. But it's easy to custom the output size with AoA DVD Ripper.

Here is a guide on how to control the output size http://www.aoamedia.com/dvd-ripper-output-size.htm . Set the output file size under 1GB, e.g. 900MB (step4). It's pretty easy.

No disrespect to Cathll. But squeezing anywere from 3-8 GB's of data onto a cd thats 650 MB's is suicide quality wise. True it will work but it will be a inferior guality. CatCrash also states he wants to watch the movie directly from his hard-drive, so there is no purpose in burning the movie to a cd. Perhaps making the 650 MB file into an ISO? But the quality would still stink. And regarding selecting the ouput size right from the AOA program even if it works its quite probable that the encode(shrinking) part of the program is inferior to that of DVD Shrink. Again i dont me to "shoot you down" but ya know. Again CptCrash if you want to use that little "guide" I post here I can go into more detail if needed just ask? - later

If the movie is not that new, you can use DVD Decrypter and rip "movie only", that will save you some time. Otherwise, like PeaInAPod says, I would use DVDFab Decrypter. With DVD Shrink you can also use the Start/End feature, this will allow you to cut out some of the credits at the end of the movie or some of the frames with the company logo at the begining of the movie. Depending on the title, you can save a couple hundred MB.
As for the quality, if you want to output 1GB or less, the quality will be poor , the compression can be even more than 50%. You might even have to shrink them twice to get them to be less than 1GB.

@cyprusrom I just wanted to point out that their is no point to "shrink it twice" I thought about that when typing most first post for CptCrash and typed my response accordingly. If you look in my thread were I have the words "EDIT" and "PREFERENCES" typed that part of the paragraph tells how to customize the ouput size of the ISO to be created from the DVD Files. Thus when this is done you only will need to encode it once!

@PeaInAPod
I know exectly what you are talking about, about costumizing size and stuff...:~)! The problem is that he wants less than 1GB. Have you ever tried that? More than possible, Shrink/Recode will not shrink at once more than 60% or so, so if you have a 4300GB movie, you will stil be left with a little less than 2Gb, which means you have to shrink one more time to get it to be <1GB. And it doesn't matter if you make an ISO or a HDD folder. You will have the same quality, same "merchendise", just different packaging, different way of delivery!The best way to go would be to rip the movie and convert to AVI.
