I'm new at upgrading my own machine and just wanted to get ram.
Well I think I bought the wrong kind already.
I bought everything right to do with this :
sdram 256 bought 2,one pair 133 mhz 168 pin gold .
what I think I didnt get right is the ecc feature . I called and the guy said that didnt matter as long as my computer recognizes the ram, thats all that matters . is that true ?
im supposed to have non parity unbuffered ram .. does all that matter or if it works it works ?? will I have ram errors i the future ? thanks .

First of all let me tell you before the mods do that you should of posted this in pc hardware forum, so if it gets moved you'll know why.
Now about the ram,did you have non-ecc ram originally installed? If so and that is what the new stuff is you will should just fine. And yes as long as your computer recognizes it it should work but,if it does'nt will he let you return it?

My old Dell gx-110 used non-buffered non ecc ram,I would expect the same for your model.

the guy I talked to also told me that I should have low density, where the one I ordered was high but if it works it will be fine .

That one is new to me,I think I'll go back to the books!Anyway I never heard of or been told of any concerns with density,or have I had any problems since not knowing the difference.Your best bet is to try it!
You can return it right?

ya i can but im new to computer upgrading . just wanted to kinda know before I take my system apart .. will also be trying to install the dvd burner I bought .. the only thing killing me with that one is the whole jumper thing . im removing my dvd-rom drive to put in the burner .. I'm leaving my cd burner . just dont know which is the master and which is the slave and how to really set the jumpers .. I guess just copy the configuration on the dvd-rom drive .. ?

That would work but if I were you I would leave the dvd rom and put the dvd burner in place of the cd burner. You can burn your cd's on the dvd burner. Then just set the new one up the same as your old one. (jumpers that is)
Btw-changing hardware is easy, just take your time and pay attention to how the old stuff was in place.

I'm going to guess no. I would want the burner as slave but it might not really matter,as long as one is master and the other slave.

No problem. I'm an old school recording guy, theres the master (source) and slave (destination),But as I said earlier in computers it may not make a difference. I have my computers setup like that I use the dvd rom as master and dvd burner as slave for recording drive to drive.Again,it may not even matter which is which. I hope I'm not confusing you as it's getting late and I'm beginning to confuse myself. lol!

Creaky-on the ball as usual! Do you sleep?

alright im going to give this all a try tomorrow ..
im going to take out my 128 mb ram and replace it with 2 256mb
then install my dvdburner in the cd burner's place ..
I guess i'll do this all in one opening of the tower and see what happens ?? or should I do one thing at a time since I dont know if the ram will work ?
Then ill keep my wife happy and build her shelves she wanted me to make for about 2 months . at least if u mess up carpentry u can moslty always start over !

Well remember to measure twice and cut once! Now as far as the computer goes,do one upgrade at a time. Install the memory-boot it up,install the dvd drive-boot it up etc,etc.. that way if you do have a problem you'll know the source. Good luck and take your time!

First of all I know all about nights,I work 3-11.Second is this is a good time to learn or teach a thing or two and third is ,if you don't have a grounding strap try to keep one hand on the metal chassis while working inside.Of course unplug the computer before doing anything.(but you knew that) Let me know how it works out.
Phillips screwdriver P.S. no need for books ,just about everything you'll ever need to know is right here-you just need to find it!
