Hey all, first time posting here... Anyhoo, I've been successful burning games for PS2; I've made about 40-50 or so backups in the past. So, it goes without saying that I'm no newbie. However, I've certainly felt like one trying to backup The Godfather and Suikoden V. I've done both direct copies, and burned downloaded ISO files; the downloaded Godfather file works beautfully, but nothing seems to work for Suikoden V. I've rebuilt it to shrink it down a bit, and still it just gives me the dreaded Black Screen of Death. There don't seem to be any dummy files to get rid of (not even cleverly renamed ones, like in the Digital Devil Saga games)... I'm using Verbatim (yes, the real thing) discs, so media isn't the issue; and I'm burning at 2x, so that shouldn't be the deal either. Is it because they're DVD-R, rather than DVD+R? I've heard some games are picky about that, for whatever reason...

Thanks in advance for whatever help you guys can provide!

it sounds like the game may be PAL. is it PAL or NTSC. cause when i download games and forget to see if its NTSC or PAL i get the black screen. but i just patch it and it works perfectly.

i have had much better luck with DVD-R
usually for me when i used Swap Magic, if it was PAL it would still play, it just would be in black&white, or the screen would be flipping out. Changing the video mode on swap magic usually solved that with the sacrafice of a liitle screen that is usually cut of due to screen rate conversion.

Now with the chip, everything plays.

you really sound like you know what your doing, so the only suggestions i can offer are.
1. if they are 8X DVD's then burn them at 4X not 2X
2. see if there is any updated firmware for your burner, but that is usually if you can't get many games to work, not just one.

I went out and picked up some more DVD+Rs, burned Suikoden V, and this time it works perfectly. It's weird that there was any difference at all; but hey, it works, so what do I care?! It was cool that I got some helpful replies so quickly, though. Thanks!
