I'm using a fairly nice Sony VCR to capture (input/composite) VHS tapes into an ATI AIW 9000 card. This method seems to work great most of the time. The VCR is stable and consistent. I also monitor the live captures on a 13" TV.

Here's the strange part.
In about one out of every 20 tapes the ATI's capture screen (LCD monitor) shows a picture that flickers and jumps every 2-3 seconds. It always starts at the very beginning of the tape and never stops. It looks similar to a bad tracking issue. Now while this is happening, the 13" TV monitor looks PERFECT .. no flickers or jumping. I've played the tapes on 2 other VCRs in the house and they're fine as well. The tapes are all Maxell or TDK high grade.
(yeah, I know .. all tapes are junk, really). And it's always the same exact tapes that do it .. no others.

Anybody have this issue?
Why would my capture card have a problem with a tape that is simultaneously playing perfectly on a TV monitor?

Thanks.

It sounds like you have some tapes that maybe have been stored in the wrong position and now they jam or stick while being played. take ine of the tapes that jerks and put it in a tape rewimder and rung it back and forth 4 or 5 times and then try it agin, his might help. since you say it is always the same tape, i think its the tapes ok

Thanks,
I would consider this except that they play back just fine on the TV monitor. If the tapes were as you say, I think they would show the
'jumping' on both screens .. not just the LCD.

Most ATI cards support Macrovision. I've got an ATI All-in-Wonder X600 Pro. If I feed a Macrovision protected tape into my ATI card the preview window in the capture software looks as if the tape is stuck and just keeps repeating the same 2 seconds over and over again.

There's nothing wrong with your tape. It can be captured by any capture device that ignores Macrovision. You might try putting a video stabilizer between your VCR and PC. Or, you'll have to purchase another capture card.
