HI max, blinkie
I did a search on the net, and read acrosee someone with the same error, and they suggest installing ForceASPI 1.7...phew luckily it works with Ridata 4x DVD+R. However, when I tried it w/Taiyo Yuen same problem occurs again, it keeps asking me to insert the disc, which I did..but the drive says it's empty. When I try it w/Ridata media, it works again. Not only Nero, but CLoneDVD,Tmpgenc. This is weird : ( because I can burn w/Taiyo Yuen before. I have lots of Taiyo Yuen media left, and only 2 more blank Ridata..
To make the long story short, right now, my burner only recognize Ridata Rx DVD+R media. Or is there a possibility that it only recognize dvd+r media and not dvd-r or dvd+rw?
I updated it to the latest VSOM one from codeguys page, but it doesn't help.
Any suggestions ? Which firmware should I download?
BTw, I tried that page to dl VSOM but it says it only work for Liteon SOHW 832s, I don't understand why either because that's the burner model I'm using. However, I'm still able to download and install the firmwares on http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html though.

Thank you so much, I really appreciated it.

Hi Blinke, I followed Gwen's post , however I still couldn't find where my Generic DVD-Rom is located. From teh NeroInfo Tool, it's under D347 SSI COntroller, but I couldn't find it under Device Manager. I could see D347 SSI COntroller, but nothing under it . However, both my primaray & secondary are already in the DMA if available mode.

thanks

@andyp95
Glad to hear at least some discs are working! Now for those Taiyo's - hmmm - I burn them on this same drive w/ the VSOM firmware and previous firmware versions so post another Nero log - just the one for the Taiyo burn failure. They are separated by this:
====== *** Nero Burning ROM, History File *** ======
Are you still using Nero 7? If so the log will be at: program files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>nerohistory.txt.

For the DMA on the rom if they are now showing in this mode that may be taken care of - the log will show if it is.
Also what type of dvd burn are you doing? Movie backup etc.

Hi Binkie,
I'm posting you this log, I'm not sure if it's right.
Anyway, now, when I insert a Taiyo Yuen 4x DVD-R in the drive, it auto eject the drive and tell me to insert a disc,...which I did..but then it keeps scanning and says that the drive is empty even though there's a disc inside. (I tried another Taiyo disc, same thing occurs)
Oh, almost forget, I'm buring image .ISO movies files which I've always been doing w/Nero.

It recognize Ridata 4x DVD+R disc, but now RW..w/RW it says illegal disc. W/Taiyo Yuen 4x DVD-R, it keeps checking for the disc and tell to insert disc, which I did :( weird.

Which VSOM firmware did you use from the code guys? The modified VSOM or the stock VSOM?
Oh and the latest Nero version is 7.0.8.2 - you can update that by going to Nero product center in smart start and downloading. Updating it may not solve this problem though but I would update.

Did you do anything with ASPI? From this
Quote:
I did a search on the net, and read acrosee someone with the same error, and they suggest installing ForceASPI 1.7...phew luckily it works with Ridata 4x DVD+R.
I cant tell if you used force aspi, or just read about it.
Check the status of your system aspi with Nero info tools.
You should see something like this on your info tool:

Also here is what AD says about ASPI layers and how to install them:
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/aspisetup.cfm

One of the things in force aspi is called killaspi, and that removes the old or corrupted aspi.
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/frcaspi.cfm

If Nero reports your system aspi as good, then im just about out of ideas as to what else it can be.

Well I'm at at loss now - maybe the drive is going? Maybe bad flash with the original patched firmware? Don't know but for now it only seems to like the ridata. Since it has this problem w/ all other burning progs too you may just want to pick up a new one - they're alot cheaper now (I remember paying $150 or something like that for this drive when it 1st came out.)

Just my 2 cents :) but go with a internal - cheaper and believe me they are way too easy too install. If I can do it anyone can!

Binkie,

Last time, somebody installed the internal Liteon for me, it looks too tough for me to install w/all the openning and stuffs. But I'll do a search and see.
Thanks

For brand I would say Plextor - that's the king of burner's (imho). Members here and my firends love this burner. Now for model I haven't looked into the different ones yet - I'm waited for the dual layer burn speed to go a little higher than 8x then I plan on getting a Plextor unless one of my drives goes sooner.
The cost of an internal vs external is almost half - installation easy. The drive should come with everything you need & the instructions are very easy to follow. It's really not that bad!!
To show how easy it is here's a link - look at # 7 & 8. In #8 thiere's also a link to show how to configure.

Hi Binike,
OMg, just realized that the Min processor requirement is 1.6 GHz, mine is only 1.5 GHz...My fault, should've looked before I order, totally forgot about that. Do you think 1.5 Ghz is still ok? Or do I really have to upgrade it to 1.6? Don't know how to do that yet, but I'll check.
BTw, have a nice weekend!

Well you'd have to upgrade your cpu. Can you system support that?
Me - I would stick with getting a burner that met or was under my system specs. I ran an internal a while back(or tried I should say) that didn't meet the cpu requirements but just meet the ram - too many problems.
Have a good weekend too!

Hi Blinke,
I cancelled that drive since it also requires usb 2.0, and I don't have that.
I just place an order for Benq 1655 internal burner, internal burner are usually work w/most computers right? Or there's anything that I need to watch for? My computer is around 6 yrs old now.
What I'm worrying about is that I'm afraid it's not my burner but pc errors therfore even if I bought a new burner I wouldn't able to burn.
This is because I've been testing w/the burner. It sometimes recognizes all dvdr media, and also burn successfully but when I put it in the dvd player it said" No Disc" or "Disc Error". Some of the times, it wouldn't burn anything at all.

Hi andyp95
Yes internal burners will work w/ pc's - just make sure you meet the minimum requirements. Make sure you have it on separate power supply.
I'm thinking your current one on it's way out.
When you get the new one 1st thing make sure the firmware is current - it may be new but the firmware has probably been updated.
Few other things to do (very doubtful will help current burning sitation -but good to do)- run a virus scan, do a disc cleanup and a system defrag.
Let us know how turns it!!

Thanks for the tip Binkie.
I did everything you mentioned..it didn't help though.
I'll let u know how it turns out after I install my burner (hopefully I do it right , sighhh **)

"Make sure you have it on separate power supply." by this, do you mean separate power for the internal drive itself? Sorry, I've never install a burner before, so I'm nout sure if that's what you're talking about. So there's a power supply along w/the cables itself?
Should I order the cables for installation too?

Some silly questions, but here's the requirements:
IBM PC compatible
Pentium III 550MHz CPU
128MB DRAM, ettc...

Does IBM PC compatible meant any pc is ok? Or does it has to be made my IBM? I'm using a Sony one. And my is 512 MB SdRAM, is it larger than 128mb DRam?

Hi andyp95,
Ill try to answer some of those questions for you.
Once you install a new burner, i think you will realize how easy it is. For most new tower cases, there are only two thumb screws holding on one side plate. Once that is removed, the drives are exposed. Most have 2 cables connecting the drive, and 2 phillips head screws holding the drive itself in. The seperate power supply warning means use a power line from the power supply for that drive only. Dont connect it to one that is also powering something else. The drive should be configured that way already, but if not, most cases have extra power leads dangling there, or tied back to the case, but not being used.
Since you are replacing a drive, you will probably re-use the existing cables, no need to order any extra parts.
IBM PC compatible, doesnt have to be made by IBM (i think they got out of the PC business a year or so ago).
Going with the internal drive is the way to go. You dont have extra stuff hanging out of the computer. The hardest part for you might be setting the drive to master, or cable select, but it will have pictures, and is probably already set correctly.
Your 512mb is ok, but you might want to upgrade to 1GB in the future. When you get the case off, get rid of any dust, and check the fans for dust while you are at it. Just read the instructions that come with the drive, and you should have no problems. I swapped my last drive out in 10 minutes, but i took time to clean the inside of the case, thats why it took so long.
Good luck. Sometimes these drives just die, and replacing them is the only way to fix it.

I've never installed an internal drive myself, so I'm kinda worry. But since everyone saying it's not that complicated, then I guess I'll be okay. I'll let you guys know how it turn out. Hope it's all good, so I don't have to bother you guys one more time hihi

You're definitely not bothering us!! I think you'll be fine installing it - maxburn also pointed out the master/slave bit - this will all be in the drive's manual. Not to worry!
In the mean time til the BenQ comes - have your tried uninstalling the Liteon in device manager then rebooting and letting windows install?
May not help but may be worth a shot.

Hi Binkie,
Yes, I've tried that also. Same result though, it didn't help.
Oh how do I know which is the lastest firmware version available though? I'm ordering a Benq Dw1655 retail box instead of the OEM because I think I'll need the manual guide.
Thanks again, have a nice weekend everyone.

Once you get the drive installed check Nero Info Tool for the firmware version - under drive tab there's a field that will display the current firmware #.
The latest for this drive is BCDB from 1/24/06 so if your drive was made before this you should update it.

Hey folks,

I too just started getting an illegal disc error from Nero (and from DVD Shrink). In fact, I just completed burning a dvd disc and went to burn it again to another disc and got the illegal disc error. Since then, every attempt results in this error. I've tried all burning speeds available, with the same result. I've used this same brand of dvds for a year to a year and a half. The disc that worked came out of the same spindle.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU!!!
