@BoxofEyes
Well the readme.txt isn't helping me either:) Looks like this drive had riplock and this removes it. Basically riplock slowed the reading/ripping to a crawl from what I've read.
I'm at a loss on why the firmware is not taking after a reboot. It sounds like you did everything correct - it's very fast to flash.
Maybe Creaky will pop back in and can help with this.
I think your best shot may be trying different media - 8x rated(no higher) Sony's, Verbatim or made in Japan Fuji. If you're in the US Best Buy has Sony's - 50 for 14.99.
Oh and your not lost - you'e been a able to a dvd before so you are far from lost! Hopefully you'll be back in business soon!

Here's something to check - check the cable from the drive to the mobo - make sure secure. You may even want to unplug each end and plug back in. May not help but another possibility to rule out.

thanks for the reply, yet again, binkie7!
yeah, i will try another media. i was able to return the previous spindle of sonys, and got another before posting that last post -- of course i now see that they were 16x too.
14.99 for 50 sonys at best buy? wow. i just paid 23+ at (blush) wal-mart tonight -- quite honestly, it is simply because it is close by. i think there may be a best buy about 20 miles away. i'll check into it.
maybe someone else (creeky?) can chime in on the firmware update, but in the meantime i will check into the other media.
thanks again for all your help!

Not a problem! Check the cables and try the new discs. You can always return them if the same things happens.
Let's see how that goes.

There's a cable that runs from the drive to the motherboard for internal drives. Sometimes they are labeled like cd/dvd drive. We can leave that alone for now. May not even help.
Try the new discs you picked up and we'll go from there.

I'd still try the ones you just bought. Your drive is recognizing them and the id code. The 1 part where they are not fully recognized in the log is here:
Quote: 00 00 00 21 00 00 00 00 .`...0@P...!....
Usually the id code is here also. Like this
Quote: 00 00 00 30 30 34 00 38 ...MCC.....004.8
Keep us posted!

hey binkie7,
the dvds i bought last night were sony 16x also. i tried about 5 of them and got the illegal disk error on all of them. sorry i didn't make that clear earlier.
it sounds like i'm screwed on the 16x until i can get the firmware updated -- don't you think?
thanks!

The firmware may help. The readme file though didn't say anything about media though but who knows what all it contains. Looks like LOCOENG found one for you.
Try some other media if not. Let's rule out media.
Have you also tried another other burning software?

well, i'm back in the burning business!
i found some sony 8x dvds and they have burnt great (so far!).
the bad news is i had to drive about a half hour away to find a Best Buy, and paid $78 for a spindle of 100 discs. i guess it's time i get with the online media purchasing.
and maybe someday i can get my firmware updated and be able to use 16x dvds.
thanks again for all the help, binkie7!

Can someone please help me? I just got a new computer and tried to burn a dvd using the same burner I was using before and worked fine. When I tried to burn a dvd with my new computer I keep receiving illegal disc errors. I don't know where to go from here. Any help would be appreciate. Also I have tried three different brands of discs and all get the same illegal disc error.

Welcome to aD!
Here's some suggestions for - step down the Nero a version or 2.
Uninstall 7.2.0.3 - run the clean tool - then install version 7.0.8.2.
Here's some links:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_7_premium/?845 (version 7.0.8.2)
http://ww2.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero7_CleanTool.html (clean tool)
Which version of Nero were you running on the other pc that worked?

A bit behind on firmware - current version is BSOY. Update to that version. Here's a link:

Great amount of ram - but you have a lot running. No multi tasking and shut down any unnessacary processes.
Try that and let us know how it goes!
