I want to upgrade my lite-on to a new burner. I really like the reviews of the Benq 1650. I have about 300 DVD-R's to burn and everyone seems to say that the Benq is only good at DVD+R. What burner is the best out right now for the DVD-R format.

Thanks

Pioneer and NEC are great for -R disks. I have both, as well as a BenQ.
Even though BenQ (and LiteOn for that matter) prefer +disks, you'd think the solidburn feature would help it to "learn" how to the -R as good as + after a few burns. Using quality media I would expect the BenQ to be more than adequate, anyway.

I've had great success with my Lite-On 1693S for DVD-Rs. Of course, I'd recommend it for any media, really, but it seems to do very well with -R.

For dash?

I'd got with pioneer or NEC as well.

I've got no issues with playing my Benq dash backups on my personal stand alones and pcs,but some of my family members do. I've got 90 Ty-G02 shiny inkjet printables to go and OK.The price factor was the main reason.

I'd say my booktyped BenQ backups fair at 95% stand alone compatable, compared to 75% for the dash backups.

The plus format media seems to have a higher quality is some brands like maxell and fuji.I hear of posts of Cmags on maxell and verbatim/and the dreaded fujifilm03 fujis, in the dash format. Not their plus format. The plus format will consist of mostly Ritek-R03 for maxell/fuji/even some memosux that someone gave me.My burn success rate is also better with the plus format.

What's the MID code for those 300 dash r's?

My worst dash media has been the Verbatim digital movie quality dash 4x. I had to give the rest of the batch away to a buddy who has an NEC 2510.

Ive got a LG gsa-4163b with the latest firmware update, this will burn anything , its not the latest model but its good. If you use TY media with it you will be 100% in your burns .
