okay here is the situation. i bought a new dell comp a few months ago with a 16X dual layer compatibility dvd+-rw dvd burner. I previously purchased a ten pack of blank memorex DVDs (DVD+R) from wal-mart to burn DVDs. They worked perfect. I then decided to purchase a 50 pack of blank DVDs from an online store (brand name Acro circle?) that are 4.7 GB 16X, the same as the memorex DVDs. However, when I attempt to burn a DVD, the program (dvd cloner 3) only reads the DVD and then ejects the blank DVD and prompts me to insert a blank DVD. I thought it was just the program but then i used a different one and the same thing happened. I then bought the same type of dvd's that worked and just today tried them and it is giving me the same problem. Any clues?

First of all, the media you're using is not very good (all of it), I suggest you switch to verbatim or sony DVD+R disks. Your drive may not be recognizing the media correctly (if at all), so that's why it's spitting it back out. I recommend you update the drives firmware to the latest if one is available since the updates add additional media compatibility.

You can use this utility to get the model# and firmware version of your drive, get it here;

http://flashman.rpc1.org/Firmware/DVD-CD_firmware_detect.exe

Once you know the model# and firmware version, click on the link provided to see if an update is available...

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php

Enter the model# and click search, if an updated version exists, click on it to get it, run the file and follow the install procedure.
Once you've updated, try burning again.

I would update the drives firmware (if one is available) and see if anything has changed. After the PC has been rebooted, see if the drive recognizes that there is media in it, try and play a DVD in the drive, if it won't do any of those things, the drive could be defective. Since you bought the computer thru DELL, you should have at least a one year tech support and parts warranty, get on the phone (have your service tag number ready) with tech support and see if you can get them to replace the drive.

I also have a DELL, 6 months after I bought the PC my drive stopped working. I contacted DELL tech support and got them to have a tech come to my home and replace the drive (had a one year warranty).

EDIT:
One more thing, you could also try uninstalling the IDE channel that the drive is on, reboot the PC, it will be detected and installed by windows upon rebooting, see if anything has changed.

When you get that new drive, please, for its sake, do not use any of those discs that you mentioned. Dump 'em! Just stick to the trusted media mentioned on this site.

Hope it works out.

How about you supply the media ID for the discs you got and we will tell you if there crap or not.

@maurem76: memorex only work for about 1% of the population.If they work for you thats great but if you have issues then change the media you are using to something more duarble like ritek or verbs

so if I buy a more quality CD like sony or vert then the image will be more quality and sound will cut out less? I'm very new to this burning dvds thing and I just figured a DVD is a DVD, what is the difference (seriously please tell me the difference).

The following list is in preference order. The best discs are near the top of the list. The discs at
the bottom of the list are suitable only for a landfill.

Almost flawless burns with 95-100% reliable results:
PVC = Pioneer = (-R)(-RW)
MXLRG01, MXLRG02 = Maxell = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes
MCC = Mitsubishi Chemicals = (-R)<-----------------VERBATIM MY CHOICE #1
TDKG02 = TDK Corp = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes
TAIYOYUDEN or YUDEN = Taiyo Yuden = (-R)<--------------FUJIFILM (made in japan) MY CHOICE #2

Decent discs, though not perfect, about 85-95%
success rate:

RICOHJPN = Ritek or Ricoh = (+R)
SONYD04 = Sony = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes

Good media Makes a BIG differnce.
get some verbatim's you will be happy you did.
