Hi,

I'm new at this, so please be kind. I used DVDFAB Decrypter to rip the 1st CD of '24' (season 3, episodes 1 - 4), and I'm left with all sorts of .VOB files and other various files. The problem is, there are only supposed to be 4 episodes on the first disc. Instead, I'm left with many .VOB files that start the episode like half way through. I'm wondering how I can rip so that I can clearly have 4 episodes (doesn't really matter what format, as long as it plays on one of my media players)?

Thanks.

edit: only 4 episodes!

Hi there.

The way DVD video files are distributed on a disc is different than the way other video files would (AVI for example). Usually, DVD movies are split in chunks of 1GB or sometimes less. This means that one episode could actually be spread over two VOB files or more.

The important thing to understand is that VOB files are not meant to be viewed individually by double clicking on them as you would with an AVI file. You should either burn you backup on a disc using the appropriate DVD Video structure or run the whole VIDEO_TS folder from your HDD with a program like Cyberlink PowerDVD. I'm sure its not the only program that allows DVD playback from HDD but I think it's one of the best ones. I use it and I love it.

If you want to rip those episodes into a "one file per episode" format, I suggest using a different program and convert them to AVI files using a DivX or Xvid Mpeg-4 compression. You can find guides and program suggestions to do this under the DivX and Xvid section of this page...

Hope it helps!

Always use good quality blank media. Verbatim is always a good call. Don't be seduced by those 50-spindles you find in the $2.99 bin at your local car wash! :)

And I was acctually able to watch a movie on my computer after I ripped it,in VOB format. Watched it in WMP. When navigating in the VIDEO_TS folder, I just double clicked the larger one.

If you navigate to and open a single VOB file from the VIDEO_TS folder, it will work. I'm just saying the file structure was not designed for this type use, hence one episode on the DVD being split in two or three VOB files.

If you want the files in .AVI format you can use DVD Decrypter to rip each episode to a specific folder using IFO mode. Then you can use a prog like Auto GK to convert them to .AVI using divx/xvid compression and you will get a single file per episode.

I have done it that way in the past so that I could have my collection of season 1 of smallville on a single dual layer dvd. Quite useful if you got a dvd player that can play .AVI files. saves having to keep changing discs.

Hope that helps

You can use SmartRipper 2.41 to get each episode off disk. Just look for the program chain menu and they are there. I did it with Band of Brothers DVD's.

If you just want to have every single episode separate, each in its own folder, and you alredy ripped the disc to your HDD, you can use DVD Shrink, reauthor mode to separate each title in a different folder.

As stated above use DVD Shrink in re-author mode. Just select the 4 largest tracks - move them to the left panel and clink backup. In Edit->Preferences you should have selected the 8.4 Gb as the disk size, and uncheck the Split VOBs into 1Gb chunks. After DVD Shrink has done its job you should have 4 VOBs, 1 for each of the episodes. Hopefully the order of the VOBs will be the right episode order. This has worked for me with the X-Files.
