I have been using DVD Decrypter for ripping movies. All the settings are as per Default. This means that the Read Setting is set to Max. I have noticed over the last couple of days that the read speed starts out at 1.9x (which it has been since about January), but then ramps down after about 5 minutes to 1.5x, where it stays. I reset the Read Setting to 4x and then 6x, but the same thing happened both times.

Does anyone know why this is happening, and if there is anything that I can do to maintain a higher speed?

Thanks.

Make sure that you have DMA enabled for your drive, here is a guide:

OK, I have printed out the guide and read it. Before I use it, could you please briefly explain what these steps are intended to accomplish, and what the expected read speed will be when I am finished?

The reason I suggested this guide was it sounds as if your drive has slipped into PIO mode which will slow down data transfer...here is a little better explanation:

http://www.pctechguide.com/08cd-rom_DMA_vs_PIO_mode.htm

The change in speed will depend on your drives capabilities and the quality of the disc your drive is trying to read from. I have an NEC drive and typically see ripping speeds between 7X and 12X, depending on the quality of the source.

I followed the instructions in the guide, and guess what? I am now extremely pleased! My Secondary Controller was set to PIO mode. I uninstalled the driver, and restarted the computer. When I rechecked the settings, they were all "DMA if enabled." My ripping speed has increased from 1.5x to about 7x, and I can now burn at the maximum of my burner (8x). It used to be 2.4X.

Thanks very much.
