My friend has a 4GB ipod and he says he is only able to get about 300 songs on it. Just wondering how many any of you have got on there? He said the box said he could get around 1500 is this right? ---zen-->

You should be able to get 1,000 songs out of it. That's what it says on the box. If he is only getting 300 normal songs out of it, He has a problem with it, unless he has a bunch of pictures on it.

Ok thanks, I will have him check out to see if their is anything else on there that could be taking up space. It is just a song w/no photos or video. I wonder what could be wrong with it? I know I should know this but what is the bit rate that itunes uses? Maybe his are too high, huh? Can you compress them some how if they are too big?

The specs on the iPod such as 15,000 songs, 150 hours of video are the specs only if you have only songs or videos, not both. If you have both, it will probably change the specs to 7,500 songs, 75 hrs. video.

He can condense the files by turning them into AAC files in iTunes, but won't change it by much. ;-)

Not necessarily.

"Song capacity is based on four minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding." - www.Apple.com

A four minute .aac file encoded at 128kbps (CBR) is about 4mb. Whereas a 4 minute song encoded at as .mp3 @320kbps (CBR) can reach 9.5+mb - Which means you wouldn't even be able to get 500 songs on your nano. So it all depends on the bitrate in which the files are encoded at, and the genuine length of your tracks.

If he hasn't changed any settings in iTunes he can mass reincode all of his files in iTunes by clicking a song in his library, hitting ctrl+a [to select all the songs] right clicking and clicking convert selection to AAC. It should then convert to AAC at 128 unless he changed some settings. I believe the default for mp3 bitrate is 160 so he may wish to choose that if he likes mp3/higher audio quality. If he wants to play around with the options go to Edit -> Prefrences -> Advanced -> Importing.

Good luck

According to apple:
Quote:
Song capacity is based on 128 kbps bit rate, 4 minutes per song.
so again this could be a problem with encoding or the size of the music or if album art is on your music or both!
