Help! Import game does not load on fliptop PS2...

I recently purchased a copy of Fire Pro R, a Japanese import game. I tried the game out on my friend's modded PS2 (fliptop), Swap Magic and all, and when I try and load the program, it just stays on the 'Now Loading' screen. Afterwards, he tried a burned backup copy of the new MGS game and it worked fine. My friend's PS2 is a version 5, while I have a slimline PS2 and am expecting a set of ghost clips in a couple of days. Is there any reason why I can't get the import to work on my friend's PS2?
