Hello fellow gurus. I've come across a problem in supporting one of my several users that insist on bringing their gadgets into. (Not that I mind since I love any new gadgets)

The problem I encounter is with the user's new retractable USB sync & charger cable for her Apple Ipod Nano. Her original cable worked fine but she purchased the retractable cable to use at work. The problem is that windows doesn't seem to notice properly. It mentions that it found a USB device that is not recognized. It lists it as an "unknown device" in device manager. I'm thinking that it needs drivers for it to be detected properly except that this item is a "brand new non-OEM" device. Thus i am unable to go to the maker and inquire about a driver. When I search online for drivers on this item, I find that the cable shouldn't need drivers. Am I missing something here? I do know that they seem to be offered alot on tons of sites selling ipod accessories. Has anyone come across the same problem? Any help you can provide would be helpful.

My question to you is, why does she need to use the iPod at work? If windows recognizes the iPod then it should be charging it [which I'm assuming is what she'd want to do] The only problem I could think of is the computer lacking the iPod Updater [when I deleted mine my iPod wasn't so happy with me].

And did she use the original cable at work? I know you said that her old cable worked fine, just wanted to check if she actually used it at work and not just at home.

Well, the company I work doesn't seem to mind using it at work. I don't think they thought we would be spending time supporting them.
In any case, you are correct....the ipod is getting charged but it still is not being recognized. I had the user do as you mentioned and downloaded the most recent ipod updater (March 2006) and rebooted the machine. It still didn't recognized the device.
We did try something different with success, though. We disconnected her laptop from her docking station and plugged her original usb cable directly to the usb port on the laptop. It would then work. We ran into the same issue with the usb sync/charger cable. I think the cable is just a bad one but not sure since it still charges the ipod

Power is much simpler to transmit then data, and it may just be a bad cable in that case.

Your friend does know that the iPod/iTunes has to be installed on her computer at work, too for her computer to recognise it, right?

That isn't the case because he said that the computer recognizes the iPod when it's connected with a standard iPod usb cable. My feeling is it's just a bad wire, those retractable wires are made very thin and could certaintly be the source of the problem.

That is incorrect. You don't need either iTunes or the iPod firmware to enable your PC to recognize your iPod. It is advisable to have iTunes to be able to play and manage your music/video collection, but it is by no means essential..

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant that she has to have it installed on the computer for iTunes to recognise it so he can add/delete songs from the iPod. Sorry for the miscommunication. :-)

koya7 - Put your iPod into disk mode. If you don't know how to do so, have a look at the following tutorial;

http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ipodsupport/diskmode/index.shtml

Once you have done this, it will force your iPod to mount with your Computer, which will allow you to restore your iPod with the Updater, and continue 'as normal' use.

That's not quite the problem Lethal, koya7 is having trouble with the retractable cable, not the iPod, since it seems to work fine using the cable that comes with the iPod. Just don't want koya to get confused.
