Gentles,
If all goes well I will have a used PS2 in hand by this weekend (I have a pending offer). It will, as far as I know, be pretty much a plain vanilla model, but it'll be used and out of warranty which means that in theory I would be able to do whatever i wanted with it.
Unfortunately my technical skills can be compared unfavroably to that of the typical koala (who is ferocious as all get out but helpless with a screwdriver in his paw). There is also a good chance that this PS2 is going to be one of the slim models, which means no legal internal hard drive kits. On top of that my money is tight these days (not only am I between jobs, but I also have a PC to fix or replace which is more important for my work than a video game console!).
Under those circumstances there may not be a lot of stuff I can do right away, and misplacing game disks may be something I very much wouldn't want to do. Is there anything that can be done to a PS2 that someone without a lot of money can manage that would be worth the trouble?

It sounds like you're looking for Swap Magic, my friend. http://www.swapmagic3.com/ They're affordable, and they work pretty darn well.

Thanks for the pointer. Looks like I won't get the console after all, though -- the seller got a more prompt offer (I was going to pay him Saturday, and someone offered to pay him immediately).
I might still get it if the other buyer wimps out, but at the offered price he WON'T.
Sorry -- I seem to have wasted your time.

Actually, this won't be a waste of time after all, because the sale is going through! I pick up the console in the morning, along with a copy (legit) of Tony Hawk 4 (which I will at least tr to play, even though one of my favorite sayings is "Skateboarding is not a crime -- yet.")
What I wonder now is whether there are any general PS2 forums as well that will help me with game selection and play.
incidentally, it will be one of the "big" models, but there isn't a hard drive installed already. That is something I would very much like to remedy. So one thing I would like to know is whether there are hard drives in addition to the one Sony offered with Final Fantasy XI that will work inside a PS2, and what the maximum practical capacity of such a drive would be.

I'm not sure on the amount of HDD space the PS2 can contain but I've read that it is possible to use other HDD's besides the one offered by sony. You are gonna need a network adaptor tho' to connect the HDD to your PS2. I am currently debating on the same exact thing. My question is, Is it possible to use the HDDD from my Tivo for my PS2 Fatty. I understand I need to get a network adapter to connect the HDD to my PS2 but I would like to know if it's possible to use the Tivo HDD for my PS2. So yeah again from what I've read it is possible to use a different HDD than the one offered by Sony. But I'm not sure as to how much HDD space the PS2 is compatible with.

A big model, eh? Very good, you're lucky. And yes, you can use harddrives other then the official Sony HDD. Here is a list of harddrives that have been tested in the PS2. http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/
As for the "maximum practical capacity" I say as much capacity as you can afford. You do understand that you will need to use a program like HDLoader to play games off of your HDD right? HDL(HDLoader)can be bought as disks, similar to Swap Magic, or, better yet used via a "independence exploit". Once you buy your Swap Magic disks you can install this exploit with no problem. It's how I played my backups with my first PS2, soley off of my HDD using HDL via exploit. I'll add some links that may help you research all of this.

You can find a lot of good information on those sites.

Who said anything about pirating? How about we all just be content to follow rule #14. Namely the part that says "Do not play the role of a moderator if you are not one......Let the moderators do their work." part?
Sheesh...

Thanx a million. Now I know what it is to become a senior member. LoL. Hey malcdogg maybe you can help me out with my question about the HDD that is in my Tivo. Is it possible to use? If so how would I go about getting it set up for the PS2, and by that I mean how do I completely empty any of the content that was on the drive? Hope you can help or someone with some info. Thanx in advance.

Haha. Not putting anyone in any place, just saying. I'm sure LiquidusX is a great guy, I just don't know where all the talk of piracy came from.
Anyways, I don't really know much about the Tivo harddrive. I looked for a pic, is this similar to what you have? http://www.9thtee.com/images/hd_tivo_bracket_3.jpg Because if it is then it *looks* like it should work just fine. As for erasing it, when you first start up HDLoader, it should format the harddrive for you, first thing. You can also format it for HDLoader by connecting it to your computer using WinHIIP. WinHIIP also allows you to install your PS2 backup images via your computer, which is faster then through your PS2 and also has many advantages.
Check out those links I posted and read around a bit. You'll come across all kinds of interesting stuff. I still remember how shocked I was when I first started messing with my PS2. You can play games off of a harddrive. There are all kinds of emulators for PS2. Which is nice, because playing those old Nintendo games on my computer just isn't the same as on a regular TV. Hell you can even play DivX movies with your PS2!
If you have any more questions feel more then free to ask. I'll always try to help if I can, and if I can't then someone else can for sure. :)

Dude your so cool. Thanx man I really appreciate the info. I have not yet taken the HDD from my Tivo because I still need to get me a network adapter first. But when i do I might have to PM you, if it's cool with you, for some info on how to do the whole emulator thing. I was actually searchingf the forums for info on it today but to no avail. Well thanx again malcdogg I hope everything is going good with you.

I came across HD Advance 3.0 and i was wondering if you know anything about it. Will it format a HDD or will only HD Loader do that?

It will format your harddrive the exact same way as HDLoader. Is it an original HDA disk you have? Or a copy?
