I have a new pc but it's used. I think it was custom build. 512mb of memory and intel 3 at 863. 20gb of hardrivve. i don't know what kind of graphic card it is. It is widows xp. I want to know what do i need to upgrade to make it more stable and faster and smooth. I'm in a budget. If you think it's better to get a new computer than tell me. I know memory makes the programs run faster and video card makes video better quilty but what does processor do? do i need to upgrade processer?

Hi rihgt682,
It will be very challenging (and not inexpensive) for you to increase that memory beyond 512MB. Sure 1GB is great, but you should be okay with 512MB.
I would invest in a modern 200GB/16MB harddisk - they are inexpensive and one would be a big improvement for you.
Presumably you have AGP video (probably AGP 4x; hopefully not AGP 2x motherboard).
You could pop in a modern $99 buck AGP 8x vidcard, which would run @ AGP 4x.
Check and see what existing video you have in the PC,
Regards

Personally if you can afford it, I would call it quits & get a new PC. Are you in the US? If so there should be some fantastic deals for you with the mail in rebates. If your in rip-off-britain like me :P then check out some of the custom builds on ebay & other such places. I don't know what you want the PC for but if it's for everday tasks, like internet word processing, email & the odd game then any modernish computer will do it for you & should cost around the $250/£400 mark depending on where you are. If you want a modern up to date gaming PC for all sing all dancing use then you are looking at more like $1200/£1400. If you let me know your location & needs in a PM of course, I will be happy to do a quick search on the net for you.

This is easy to say (but not very helpful).
If you are driving an old car and praying it will get you to your job every day, the suggestion that you should buy a new car is very similar...
Hey, sounds pretty good to me - but who pays, LoL :^)

Yes I understand; it's a fine old PC with plenty of memory.
Just use it, or if you want it would benefit from a new harddisk as I have said.
Is it better to get a new computer? Well YES! And new cars are better too...
But your old car will look pretty nice to somebody who is taking the bus, y'know?
Old cars (and old PCs) are still good.

Of course I know what you mean, however I was only following rihgt682's request he said:-

What you say about about computers could be said of anything. Houses, boats, phones, watches. Anything you think of it's better to have new but needs to be afforded somehow!! I am lucky enough to have a newish computer which is made from AMD 3200+ 64 bit with 1gb DDR memory, however that said it is only cos I built it myself bit by bit, I would never be able to afford a new computer from scratch, especially now I can't work because of my health!!

I understand what your saying of course, but am just trying to be helpful, & sometimes the best way to do that is to give an honest opinion even if it does seem a little brutal at times.

In reality, If you want a reliable easy PC and you're that far back, I'd say get a basic new system. You won't be spending that much more on a whole new system than you'll need to bring that one up to scratch.

The reason i think it needs a little upgrade is because it's laggy. It's not smooth as my other computer. My budget is about $150. I'm sorry if i put this in a different fourm.

At 863 you are just kicking a dead horse. There is no improvement to be found. The only thing it would be good for is surfing the net and running a web server. Maybe a word processor. But it aint going to do nothing else....

what he means is you're not likely to see much of an improvement with stuff that's compatible with that PC because the technology is so old. To get much of an improvement in performance, you need to change socket, so new motherboard, new CPU and new memory all boxes that must be ticked. Given how much this will cost you, might as well go for a whole new system.

Exactly....well said Sammorris. The only time I keep a old puter is running is if I have spare parts for it and I never put nothing in it ($$$) unless I have to.....I just put wat I can get for free, because it just isnt worth it.

As far as I see it, and old PC is only really worth keeping either as maybe a file server, or just a backup PC if something goes wrong with your main system, but we have laptops for this purpose nowadays, and since they're pretty cheap, why bother keeping old heaps around?
My school donates old PCs to African countries, that's a much better use than sitting gathering dust in your cupboard/closet!
