Hoping someone could help me out with this...

i want to take shows i record using a media center pc, and convert it to xvid or divx... the files are recorded in .avi format.

i'm trying to learn up on this and from what i've read .avi refers to the way video and audio are related, not the codec in use.

so...

1. what codec is windows using to record these shows?
2. how do i edit the video files so i can make the file size much smaller and still keep decent quality...

i am a fan of The Office on NBC and I download their shows on via torrents, i always notice that in the title they especify the use of XVID, and it looks great, and is not too big. i want a similar effect...
