So a few weeks ago I was posting here about how happy I was with swap magic and the slide tool and how I had great success in backing up my games for the first time and playing them thanks to all the info here. So I decided to get the flip top to make it even more easier. I got the correct one for my system today and carefully unscrewed my case. I carefully removed the part that covers the games when the tray slides in like you should since you cant use the flip top if its there. Closed it up carefully and started it up. It worked ecxept it made hideous sounds when booting up games and the laser read sounds sounded extra loud. I couldnt understand it. the games played fine but the sounds the PS2 was making did not sound good. I checked to make sure everything was put back normal and it was. Finally I replaced the flip top with my original cover to see if the sounds went away. Well they did but now NO GAMES WORK! My regular non burned PS2 games give me the red screen asking to insert a PS2 game. So i put back the Flip top and not even swap magic boots anymore. It makes horrible noises and nothing works. I didnt touch the laser or anything like that. I do not understand. I am so pissed and tired (its 12:30am now, I started at 9) I cant even think straight. I dont know what im gonna do. Guess I will check back here tommorrow for suggestions. Oh, and my PS2 was mint before this, never had any problems with it in nearly three years.

This sux.

You should have stuck to the slide tool!
Ok, I think your laser needs re-aligned, for a guide on this, read the - Games stuttering and skipping or just not booting at all?" guide in my sig, this will show you how to re-align the laser.

put the fliptop back on but DO NOT tighten the screws down all the way.. Yes keep them a little loose.. If you tighten the screw to tight the PS2 will make noises and strain...

if that doesn't work try adjusting the laser with the fliptop still installed (easier to get to the laser)

here is a link that should help

The flip top will make a little more noise than the stock top did.
But it is 10 times easier than using a slidecard.
I agree with the above, check the laser.
I installed my flip top and had the problem with the top screwed on to tight as mentioned above, i had to completely remove all the screws and leave them out of the bottom before mine worked right.
But that is not your problem if you put the stock top back on and it still didn't play games. It is just a suggestion for when you get that fixed and reinstall it.

Thanks for all the help. I figured someone would say "You idiot! You did this wrong etc.!" I put the Flip Top back on. I think one problem last night was that the second time I didnt screw it down thats why i was getting the red screen asking for a Ps2 disc. So now I screwed the flip top back on and all games work BUT it still makes some crappy grinding noises when booting games. I will try adjusting the screws again. Do you guys think i should try the laser adjust even though Im not getting disc read errors anymore just the horrible noises?

Loosen the screws first and see if that helps.. If the screws are too tight it will cause the disc not to spin right... (new case is to tight around disc) if that doesn't work then try the laser adjustment..

Alright. I tried loosening the screws and that didnt help. Again, the games are playing fine just making crappy noises when they spin. Can laser adjust actually stop the noise as well as skipping discs? Cuz my discs play fine they just make horrible noises.

What Media are you using? That can also be a big part of the noise problem.. If the laser is having a hard time reading the media..
Brand? Media code? -R/+R?

Also what ver # PS2 do you have?

Ill try the laser adjustment then. I use Maxell DVD+R media. They didnt make any noise when I used the slide card and swap magic. Only after I installed the Flip Top. My PS2 version is the older fat one with 8 screws underneath.

Did you just keep playing and ignore the noise or did you fix it?

Are you booktyping your DVD+R's to DVD-rom? Try that too and it should take the strain off the laser...

Hey backohead. I may know exactly what the problem. When you put on the fliptop, did the lid already have the white disc in it or did you have to take it out of the original dvd drive top?

If it already had the white disc in it, that's your problem. If you take a look at the 2 discs side by side, you'll see that the original sony disc has a nice heavy metal "slug" in it and the aftermarket disc has a thin metal washer.

The magnet in the dvd drive which that disc sits on is not getting good enough contact with that washer, and that lets the disc slip on the spindle when the rpm's go up. That slipping is the grinding sound you're hearing.

That might be it! It had its own white disk in it. Thats the one Ive been using. So what do I do? Swap them out? Is that easy to do? Any suggestions? Let me know!

just pry the original out of the old rom lid, and pry the one in the fliptop out and swap them, can be done w/ a small flathead screwdriver or even a pen/pencil could work. (i had same issue w/ the one that came w/ the fliptop because i had the lid too tight, then when i loosened the lid i put the old white disc back in and it worked fine.

Yep... swap it out. You can just pop it out with your fingers. Make sure you put it in the right side up. Also make sure when you're setting a game in the tray that you're setting the disc under the lip on the left side of the tray.
