For some strange reason, overnight, my Lite-on SOSW-852s has stopped burning DVDs. I'm trying with the exact same media as before (although its a new batch). I'm using DATASAFE DVD-R's, which i've used hundreds of times before. I've reinstalled my firmware to PSX3 and tried three other media types but to no avail. I've tried three different burners also (Nero 6.3.0.2, dvd decyrpter and sonic).

the error message shown in nero is 'unspecified target error'.

I've crawled through many forums but haven't found anything to help. I know it cant be the media, because i've used it before. I just bought some RIVISION DVD-R's and some DATAWRITE's and they dont burn either... again with the same error messg.

I think the problem is with reading the disks, however i don't know how this could have occured overnight.

hopefully there will be an obvious (for someone else) solution that i'm simply overlooking.

Any help at all would be soooo appriciated.

Here's a copy of my burn log, if that helps..

I would recommend upgrading your memory. Please shut down any application you might be running when using Nero.

Also, I never heard of any of the medias you brought. Buy some good quality media such as Verbatim and TY.

Thank you for your promt reply, however...

the DMA on my burner is ON its the DMA on my DEAMON image drive that is off.

Also the reason the memory was low was because i had other programs open. When i do a normal burn i shut down all other progs, I knew the burn would fail, I just needed the log info.

I'm using media i've used many many times before, all with perfect results. This is why i'm assuming its not the media...

any other help would be useful..

Hi.

Nero version: 6.3.0.2 (Nero Express)
The best version of Nero is without a doubt the 6.6.0.18... Not the latest but the most stable at this point in time. Here's the link for the upgrade:

I would consider an upgrade on your RAM very quickly if you want to get into the hobby... I normally recommend a minimum of 512Mb... I have 1024Mb and i'm considering another upgrade...

Are those TDK made? They do burn good and even work... But... You do want to be able to watch the film next year don't you? There's a lot more reliable brands out there for not much more(if any!)money than those Datasafe's... Verbatims, Taiyo Yuden or Maxell (made in Japland) are the best choice without a doubt... Just my opinion...

What we have here is that the burner can't recognize the disc... Don't know if the reason is because the firmware is out of date (can't check as the firmware page is down) or the discs are too new...
You should have something like this:
Quote:

Hence the error that followed that part of your log...

Burning too slow can create problems as well you know... I would recommend burning at 4x really...

Like nasayin pointed out, the main cause for the burning problem has got to be the memory limitations...
Any questions, feel free to post them. ;)

Thanks for your help permiggs. I know my rams low but its a laptop, so i guess i'm limited. It's strange why it can't regognise media i've tried and used before, plus a handfull of other brands. I couldn't change the burn speed in Nero, hence being at 2x, I normally burn at 4x. I guess this is still down to the media not being recognised. I'm in the UK and these brands are everywhere and come recomended from loads of media stores...alas. I'll check my firmware again when their page is up agin, though fairly sure its up to date.

I'm going to upgrade Nero now anyway and i'm going to fork out some more money on some verbatims... so fingers crossed.

Thanks for your help guys.. your all legends!
