I've got to admit defeat!
Have a new pc only 4 days old and have been burning DVD's fine ......then the problem
Tried to burn a CD-R Mp3 Disc and have not had a hope in hell's chance of finishing one all i keep getting is a fixation error every single time even with just a plain audio CD can't even burn a CD-r with the windows writable folder or thr Roxio program which came with the machine!
wasted 13 discs today trying all sorts of different things with comments on here and still nothing!
Error log i get with Nero is huge and am not sure of how much of it to post
Help me please before I smash the thing!!
Oh yeah its a Dell Dimension 515OC

Roxio and Nero don't play well (ditch Roxio!).

if it's Nero 6, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

if it's Nero 7, let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in C:\Program Files\Nero\Nero 7\Core\NeroHistory but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '5C' or similar.

either way you can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

i've teleported thread to the Nero forum

Shiny verbs eh ?, i'll have a look at that now though i've recently bought about 500 16x discs (MCC004) (made in India but nice enough). had a look then realised they're not for me, i'm not into all that printing on discs lark. but i'll keep my ears open on info on the quality of the discs in case they pop up in threads

Hi Gwen. You alright?

Yeah, it's pain in the neck, this is my link: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php
(all different... LOL)

My alternative is this one... Not as complete(by a mile!) but pretty good nevertheless...
http://www.disc-info.com/content/view/12/28/

But just like Creaky, i do a lot of googling as well...

Firmware problems?
Well, your firmware should be up-to-date, since your machine is new... But we still need a decent log to look at...

Nero Version: 6.6.0.13
There's not a lot wrong with that version, but the best one is still the Nero 6.6.0.18 -

And here, it kills it...
Go to Nero's 'File --> Preferences --> Ultrabuffer' and increase the buffer.

Run "ScanDisc" and "Defrag" on your hard drive. This minimizes the possibility of "Buffer Underrun" errors.

Close any program running in the background (e.g. anti-virus programs). You can do this manually by using the 'Ctrl-Alt-Del'. For Win95/98/ME: Just close all programs except for Systray and Explorer. For Windows 2000/XP systems use Ctrl-Alt-Del, go to Task Manager and close all programs. But sometimes for Windows 2000 and XP it´s not enough to close all programs in the background. A good program to help in these cases is ?EndItAll?; please search for it at for example http://www.google.com/.

Try different media brands. The one that you are using may not be compatible with your recorder.

Update the firmware version on your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest release.

Try using a different data source (different hard drives, CD-/DVD-ROMs or network drives) to see if it is corrupted or too slow.

Test your drive speed or use a simulation in order to obtain the optimal speed for your system and recorder. If not the maximum possible write speed of the recorder is kept as default.

Leave it at 80, it's maxed out already...

Your machine shouldn't do that... There's something wrong with your system...

Eliminating Buffer Underrun Errors and Wasted CDs
When burning audio CDs, it is absolutely critical that the data stream from the hard drive to the CD writer is as continuous as possible. The CD writer has an internal memory buffer to compensate for small gaps; but if your hard drive or your CPU is interrupted for too long, the CD writer will run out of data. Because the CD writer cannot wait, this will cause gaps and noise in the music, or, in the worst case, it will ruin the entire disk. Buffer underrun errors are a common problem when burning CDs.

What Causes the Problem?
Why is the CPU interrupted? Windows is a multi-tasking operating system, meaning it can run many programs simultaneously. The CPU, however, can only do one thing at a time. To solve this problem, Windows divides the CPU time into small slices and gives each running program a short period of time to execute before the CPU is handed over to the next program. The more programs you run, the smaller each time slice gets. If the slices are too small, there may not be enough time for the burning software to fill the buffer on the CD writer. What about the hard drive? Just like the CPU, the hard drive cannot read everything at the same time. If, for example, some anti-virus software or a screen saver starts in the middle of your CD burning session, the hard drive may get occupied with other things and stop reading CD data.

What Can You Do?
What can you do to prevent buffer underrun errors? There are a few things you should always do before burning audio CDs:

1. Reboot the computer before you begin to make sure the operating system is completely stable (You never know after running a few games).

2. Terminate all programs but the CD burning software. Of course, you need WinTasks to be able to stop all the invisible background processes. If you are using WinTasks 5, you only have to do this once, since it is now possible to save the currently running processes and their priorities to a preset. To restore the optimal CD burning process configuration later, you can simply click the Preset button.

3. Don't use your CD writer's maximum burning speed if you have any gaps or jumps in the music. If your writer can burn at 4x, use 2x, if the writer can handle 8x, use 4x, and so on. This way, the CPU will only have to send half as much data to keep the buffer full, making the whole process less sensitive to errors.

4. Try increasing the priority of the CD burning software. You may have to try a few different settings before you find the optimal priorities for your system. Use WinTasks to change the priorities and create presets in WinTasks for the optimal settings once you have figured them out. You should not modify the priorities of the system processes (red); use the built-in descriptions to find out what each process does. (WinTasks 5 has built-in descriptions for most system processes and many other processes as well.)

5. Always cache to the hard drive before burning. (This is usually an option in your CD burning software)

- whilst your version of Nero is pretty up to date, the burner isn't supported other than generically, so you do actually need to update to 6.6.0.18...

- very obscure burner this one, never have much luck finding firmware for this one. found this http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=156992 where there's talk of having to use Dell firmware. either way the discs you're using at the moment are recognised by the current firmware so we can leave that for another time
